    Abstract: Described herein are graphite-based infrastructures for high-temperature and/or high-pressure applications and methods of fabricating thereof. Also described are thermal batteries including such infrastructures. An infrastructure may include two graphite structures and a carbide-containing seal positioned between and monolithic with each structure end. The carbide-containing seal may include titanium carbide, zirconium carbide, and/or hafnium carbide. The carbide-containing seal is configured to withstand a temperature of greater than 1500° C. (a) while subjected to an internal pressure of greater than 0.7 MPa (about 100 psi) produced by a molten tin flown through the first structure and the second structure and (b) while remaining monolithic with each of the first-structure sealed end and the second-component sealed end, thereby sealing the two structures. The carbide-containing seal may be formed by graphite fusing, which involves one or more of brazing, reaction bonding, and diffusion bonding.

    Abstract: Described herein are energy storage systems comprising battery units and low-oxygen enclosure units that form enclosed environments around the battery units. Also described are methods of operating such energy storage systems such as achieving and maintaining low oxygen concentrations in the enclosure units (e.g., less than 100 ppm) and other conditions (e.g., moisture, temperatures) while supporting battery unit operations (e.g., heat dissipation, degassing). An enclosed environment may have a volume of at least 50 m3, sufficient for a battery unit with a capacity of at least 1 MWh. In addition to environment purging capabilities, the enclosure unit comprises an oxygen-getter unit (e.g., molten media) which allows to reduce the number of purging cycles and addresses possible oxygen ingress (e.g., through the enclosure walls and/or outgassing).

    Abstract: Described herein are thermal battery systems comprising emitter units equipped with vapor barriers. A vapor barrier prevents vapors (e.g., released by the emitter base during its heating) from reaching a TPV receiver when the TPV receiver is inserted inside the emitter unit. For example, the emitter base may comprise graphite, while the vapor barrier may comprise tungsten (at least on the TPV-facing surface). At the emitter unit's operating temperature of about 2000° C., the vapor pressure of tungsten is about 10,000 times lower than that of graphite (e.g., 10?7 Pa vs. 10?3 Pa). As such, the graphite emitter base may release appreciable amounts of vapors, which (if not blocked) can deposit on the TPV receiver (operating at less than 100° C. even when inside the emitter unit cavity). The vapor barrier blocks this vapor from reaching the cavity, while the emitter base provides mechanical support to the vapor barrier.
