  • Patent number: 7168396
Abstract: A compression ignition engine (10) has a control system (24) for processing data, one or more cylinders (16), a fueling system (18), and a variable valve actuation mechanism (20). Control system (24) develops both fueling data for fueling the engine and timing data representing time during the engine cycle for intake valve closure to a cylinder that will endow the cylinder with an effective compression ratio (ECR) appropriate to current engine operation for causing auto-ignition to occur near or at top dead center in the engine cycle. During a compression upstroke, the cylinder is fueled according to the fueling data and intake valve closure for the cylinder is performed according to the timing data. This creates an air-fuel mixture that is increasingly compressed to the point of auto-ignition near or at top dead center.

  • Patent number: 7131271
Abstract: An engine system (20) includes an intake system (26) through which charge air enters combustion chambers, and an exhaust system (28) that includes a CDPF (34), through which products of combustion pass to the surrounding atmosphere. A throttle valve (36) is located in The exhaust system (28) downstream of both the CDPF (34) and the turbocharger turbine (30). An EGR flow path for recirculating exhaust gas from the exhaust system to the intake system includes an EGR valve (48) for controlling EGR flow. The EGR flow path is connected to the exhaust system upstream of the throttle valve and downstream of both the CDPF and the turbine, and to the intake system upstream of the turbocharger compressor Valves (36, 48) are under coordinated control provided by an engine control system (24) for selectively restricting the respective valves to attain desired EGR flow.

  • Patent number: 6439194
Abstract: A fuel system for a diesel engine having a plurality of combustion chambers, the engine having ignition cackle occurring in at least one combustion chamber includes a standard fuel injector being associated with each of the non-cackling combustion chambers, and a non-standard fuel injector being associated with each of the cackling combustion chambers, each of the non-standard fuel injectors having an increased pilot volume of fuel, the increased pilot volume of fuel having a quantity of fuel therein for injection into the associated combustion chamber. A non-standard fuel injector and a method for affecting cackle are also included.

  • Patent number: 4917546
Abstract: An apparatus and process for fluidizing solid particles by causing rotary motion of the solid particles in a fluidizing chamber by a plurality of rotating projections extending from a rotatable cylinder end wall interacting with a plurality of fixed projections extending from an opposite fixed end wall and passing the solid particles through a radial feed orifice open to the solids fluidizing chamber on one side and a solid particle utilization device on the other side. The apparatus and process are particularly suited for obtaining intermittent feeding with continual solids supply to the fluidizing chamber. The apparatus and process are suitable for injecting solid particles, such as coal, to an internal combustion engine.
