Patent number: 11414949Abstract: The present invention discloses apparatus and methods for a lightweight subsea intervention package. In one embodiment, the system comprises a lower riser package for controlling the subsea well which utilizes a plurality of hydraulically activated well barriers. An emergency disconnect package is secured to the lower riser package and is electrically connected to the lower riser package. The emergency disconnect package is operable to seal the bottom of a riser and minimize environmental leakage of fluid from the riser. The lower riser package and emergency disconnect package each contain a closed loop system of fluid operable to control the system without fluid from the surface. Each is operable to control the well barriers. Either an electrical connection or an acoustic control system may be utilized to control the system. The lower riser package can be operated from the surface when the emergency disconnect package has been disconnected.Type: GrantFiled: March 26, 2020Date of Patent: August 16, 2022Inventor: Reddi Udaya Bhaskara Rao

Patent number: 11156055Abstract: A locking mechanism for a subsea cutting/sealing device to seal a wellbore and cut any drill pipe in the wellbore. The subsea cutting/sealing device locks two pipe cutters in a closed position utilizing locking mechanisms on two position rods. The position rods are part of a visual indicator that an ROV camera or diver may use to determine whether the pipe cutter is closed or open position. The locking mechanism operates according to a sequence of operation for opening/closing the pipe cutters. An ROV tool can be used that is capable of operating the locking mechanism as well as opening and closing the subsea cutting sealing device.Type: GrantFiled: January 28, 2019Date of Patent: October 26, 2021Inventor: Reddi Udaya Bhaskara Rao

Patent number: 10954738Abstract: An intervention package for servicing a subsea well has an emergency disconnect package mountable to a riser and a lower riser package connectable to the subsea well. One or more compact cutting devices are utilized on the lower riser package. The intervention package can be used without a BOP. The compact cutting device has a throughbore going through the body that is connectable to the wellbore. Mounted in the body are two gates that are continuously in contact with each other. Each gate has a blank portion and an opening. For each gate, a piston and piston chamber are on the opposite side of gate from the bore that goes through the body.Type: GrantFiled: January 14, 2019Date of Patent: March 23, 2021Inventor: Reddi Udaya Bhaskara Rao

Patent number: 10655421Abstract: A subsea compact cutting system operable for cutting pipe utilizing two gates. Each gate preferably has a blanking portion and an opening through the gate. A first gate is moveable only between an open throughbore position and a partially open throughbore position. A second gate is moveable between an open throughbore position and a closed throughbore position. To cut pipe and seal off the throughbore, the first gate is moved to a position where a cutting element on the first gate is centrally located in the throughbore. The second gate moves to seal the throughbore. A cutting element on the second gate interacts with the cutting element on the first gate to cut pipe in the throughbore.Type: GrantFiled: November 8, 2017Date of Patent: May 19, 2020Inventors: Reddi Udaya Bhaskara Rao, Tom McCreadie

Patent number: 10316608Abstract: As compared to a BOP, a compact lightweight cutting system may have two gates with cutters moveable in opposite directions to cut drill pipe. The system utilizes a relatively short stroke and relatively less hydraulic oil for subsea operation. The system utilizes two gates with flat surfaces for sealing with the two corresponding upper and lower seats. The compact cutting system with a gate valve can be used to substitute for a BOP to significantly reduce the size and weight required in an intervention system.Type: GrantFiled: July 12, 2017Date of Patent: June 11, 2019Inventors: Reddi Udaya Bhaskara Rao, Tom McCreadie

Publication number: 20190145214Abstract: An intervention package for servicing a subsea well has an emergency disconnect package mountable to a riser and a lower riser package connectable to the subsea well. One or more compact cutting device are utilized on the lower riser package. The intervention package can be used without a BOP to avoid the weight, size, and complexity of the BOP. The BOP requires maintenance after each cut, while the CCD does not, which is a major advantage for subsea projects. Due to decreased size and weight as compared to a BOP, the CCD can be easily transported and installed using less expensive methods, reducing overall time and costs for subsea projects.Type: ApplicationFiled: January 14, 2019Publication date: May 16, 2019Inventor: REDDI UDAYA BHASKARA RAO
