The process is carried out in a first distillation column consisting of a lower reactive section and an upper rectification section and a second rectification column. The reactive section of the first column has a practically constant thermal profile at the optimum temperature for the reaction, and that with the use of the second column a circulation of dimethyl carbonate is created between the top and bottom of the first column which allows an advantageous excess of dimethylcarbonate to be fed to the bottom of the first column.
