Patent number: 5916399Abstract: A transfer sheet material for forming retroreflective graphic images on a substrate, the sheet material comprising a monolayer of transparent microspheres; a color layer printed over the microspheres in a first graphic segment of the sheet material in an imagewise pattern, the color layer comprising a transparent colorant in a transparent resin; a reflective layer printed over the microspheres in a second graphic segment of the sheet material in an imagewise pattern, the reflective layer comprising reflective flakes in a transparent binder, wherein the microspheres are partially embedded in at least one of the color layer and the reflective layer, individual microspheres having the reflective flakes arranged in cup-like fashion about their embedded portions; and a bonding layer printed over the color layer and the reflective layer, the bonding layer being sufficiently thick to embed all exposed surfaces of the color layer and the reflective layer and being adapted for use in securing the sheet material to a sType: GrantFiled: April 18, 1994Date of Patent: June 29, 1999Assignee: Minnesota Mining and Manufacturing CompanyInventor: Ulf N. Patent number: 5785790Abstract: A transfer with durable images comprising a support sheet having a monolayer of transparent microspheres that are partially embedded in the support sheet with a specularly reflecting layer covering the parts of the surfaces of the microspheres which are exposed above the support sheet. One or more coatings of two-component colors can be printed imagewise on top of the layer of microspheres. The two-component colors are based on a polyester resin an isocyanate hardener.Type: GrantFiled: December 19, 1995Date of Patent: July 28, 1998Assignee: Minnesota Mining and Manufacturing CompanyInventors: Ulf N. Patent number: 5679198Abstract: A transfer that is produced by the steps comprising: (a) printing imagewise on a support sheet that has a layer of microspheres embedded therein one or more colored layers that are prepared from a polyester resin and an isocyanate hardener, (b) if more than one colored layer is printed, drying each color layer separately before the next layer is primed, and applying over all the layers a layer of a corresponding two-component extender or a polyester-based glue, and (c) while the single-color layer or the extender layer is still wet, applying a powder of a polyester or polyamide based elastomer, and fusing the powder into the color layer or the extender and color layers.Type: GrantFiled: December 19, 1995Date of Patent: October 21, 1997Assignee: Minnesota Mining and Manufacturing CompanyInventors: Ulf N. Patent number: 5612119Abstract: A transfer for decorating surfaces comprises microspheres that are embedded about one-fourth to one-half the microsphere's diameter in a support sheet. The embedded portion of the microspheres have a reflective layer associated therewith to allow a retroreflective article that is stripped from the transfer to retroreflect light. One or more colored layers are printed imagewise one the microspheres. The color layers are prepared from a polyester resin and an isocyanate hardener. If more than one color layer is printed on the microspheres, then a two-component extender or a glue that contains a polyester is disposed on top of all the colored layers. An elastomer that contains a polyester or polyamide is then applied over either a single color layer or a multiple color layers and the extender layer or the polyester containing glue while either is still wet. The elastomer is fused into the single color layer or the extender layer or polyester containing glue and colored layers.Type: GrantFiled: December 19, 1995Date of Patent: March 18, 1997Assignee: Minnesota Mining and Manufacturing CompanyInventors: Ulf N.
