  • Patent number: 4971833
Abstract: Methods for coating hydrophilic gels onto the surface of solid particles are disclosed which include utilizing hydrophilic solid particles, intimately admixing these hydrophilic solid particles with a hydrophilic gel-forming substance at a temperature above the gelling temperature so as to coat the solid hydrophilic particles, and then separating these coated particles from each other and cooling them to a temperature below the gelling temperature. The use of these coated particles is also disclosed in connection with various separation processes, such as an ion exchanger, in those cases where the gel-forming substance contains charged groups, or providing the particles with suitable adsorbent groups.

  • Patent number: 4783264
Abstract: A process is disclosed for the recovery of a compound, for example, a peptide-containing compound, from a solution containing contaminants through combined affinity-chromatographic purification and ultrafiltration. The process comprises contacting the solution containing the compound and impurities with a first complex of ligand bound to a carrier so as to form a second complex of the compound, the ligand and the carrier, wherein the carrier is comprised of a macromolecular solid material; subsequently splitting off of the compound from the second complex to reform the compound and first complex; and separating of the compound from the first complex. An arrangement for the recovery of a compound from such a solution containing impurities is also disclosed.

  • Patent number: 4361484
Abstract: A process for the treating of and/or removal of substances from a liquid, especially whole blood, via a semipermeable microporous membrane (13, 14, 15) through adsorption and/or biological reaction by means of a biologically active material. Said whole blood is exposed to pressure variations at the membrane surface in a way such that a penetrating fraction of said whole blood is flowing in an alternating flow path through the membrane walls for contacting said biologically active material.Said biologically active material is asymmetrically immobilized in and on the surface of the side of said membrane that faces away from said whole blood. Alternatively, said biologically active material may be bound to an unsoluble matrix behind said membrane.Said membrane is for example provided within a casing (7, 8, 9) comprising inlet (10) and outlet (11) for said whole blood.

  • Patent number: 4352374
Abstract: An apparatus and method are provided for diluting a concentrated solution to be analyzed which includes a Y-coupling for combining a diluent and the concentrated solution to form a mixture. The mixture is then divided into first and second parts, such as by a pumping arrangement, with the second part of the mixture being proportional in quantity to the quantity of concentrated solution. The first part of the mixture is then supplied to an analytical device for analyzing the mixture. A chamber including a movable wall element is provided which divides the chamber into two subchambers. The first part of the mixture is supplied to the subchamber on one side of the movable wall element, which causes the movable wall element to force a proportional quantity of diluent out of the subchamber on the other side of the movable wall element. The dispensed diluent is then conveyed to mix with the concentrated solution.

  • Patent number: 4311789
Abstract: A method is provided for sampling and measuring the content of a low-molecular weight compound, such as glucose, cholesterol, or urea, in a complex fluid medium to be sampled, such as blood. A dialyzer is placed in contact with the complex fluid medium so that it passes through the dialyzer. One or more semipermeable membranes are disposed within the complex fluid medium to form one or more passageways for the passage of dialysis fluid, with the passageways being substantially smaller in volume than the volume of the surrounding complex fluid medium. A fractional portion of the complex fluid medium is acted on by the dialysis fluid and dialyzed so that only a fractional portion of the low-molecular weight compound diffuses into the passageways containing the dialysis fluid to produce a dialysate in the passageways. The dialysate is then measured to determine the content of the low-molecular weight compound in the complex fluid medium.

  • Patent number: 4266021
Abstract: A method and apparatus is provided for measuring the content of a compound in a liquid medium, and which is particularly useful for measuring the concentration of a low molecular weight compound in a complex medium in which there is provided a dialyzer in contact with the complex fluid medium and through which dialysis fluid is conducted to receive by diffusion a portion of the low molecular weight compound to produce a dialysate. The dialysate with the low molecular weight commpound to be examined is first conducted through a venting device for removal of gaseous particles therefrom before conduction through a reaction chamber containing enzymes for promoting the conversion of the low molecular weight compound in the dialysate into a converted reaction product.

  • Patent number: 4229542
Abstract: A method and apparatus is provided which measures the content of a low-molecular compound, such as glucose, cholesterol, or urea, in a complex medium, such as blood. A dialyzer is placed in contact with the complex medium so that the complex medium may pass therethrough. In addition, dialysis fluid is supplied through the dialyzer to produce a dialysate having a property which can be measured. In the preferred embodiment, an enzyme is added to the dialysate to chemically react with the low-molecular compound to produce a chemical change which can be measured.

  • Patent number: 4123353
Abstract: A method and apparatus is provided for measuring the content of a low-molecular weight compound in a complex medium which includes a dialyzer, conduits for conveying the complex medium through the dialyzer and conduits for supplying dialysis fluid to the dialyzer to receive by diffusion a portion of the low-molecular weight compound in the complex medium to produce a dialysate. Apparatus is also provided for conducting the dialysate produced from the dialyzer to a measuring unit, wherein the conducting apparatus includes a main flow line having an enzyme bed and a shunt flow line. A control device is provided for directing the flow of dialysate through the main flow line and the enzyme bed or the shunt flow line, so that the flow of dialysate bypasses the enzyme bed. Apparatus is also provided for comparing the dialysates in the main and shunt flow lines.
