Abstract: In order to tighten a side air bag in the gas-filled condition, viewed in the driving direction, this side air bag is held on its forward air bag portion by way of a catch string and, on the rearward air bag portion, by way of a tightening string on respective columns of the vehicle occupant compartment. The tightening string is guided by way of a first stationary deflection member provided in the lateral roof edge area as well as around a second deflection member provided on the side air bag in it lower edge area, which second deflection member is situated between the two fastening points of the tightening string, on the one side, on a column of the vehicle occupant compartment and, on the other side, on the side air bag.

Abstract: The invention relates to a collision protection device, especially for passengers in vehicles and more especially in motor vehicles, consisting of a cushion or a cover plate, an air bag, a securing component, electronic or mechanical devices and a gas generator, in which the air bag consists of a coated or uncoated fabric, a lower section (2) with a gas inlet aperture, which may be fitted with a flame guard, an upper section (1), one or more multi-layer safety stop bands (3), where the ends of the safety stop band(s) is/are secured by sewn seams (4) to the upper section, the lower section, other components or, if there are more than one of them, together, in which the sewn seams are substantially circular or oval within the ends of the safety stop band(s).

Abstract: An airbag for motor vehicles comprises an airbag sheath and an inner airbag that is inflated before the airbag sheath and, by virtue of its design, is prepared for deliberate filling with gas in the direction of the passenger, with the inner airbag having a cross section that decreases uniformly in the direction of the passenger, to aim the gas stream toward the passenger.

Abstract: An impact protection device in a motor vehicle having a vehicle seat has a taut tightening strap which reaches from the upper area of the backrest into the forward area of the seat cushion, so that the backrest is prevented from folding backwards in a vehicle crash. A protective element is positioned laterally on the vehicle seat, so that the impact of a sitting person moving toward the side during a vehicle crash can be damped.

Abstract: A protection system for a competition vehicle for a competition vehicle driver has shoulder belt parts provided with one shoulder air bag respectively which can be inflated within fractions of seconds and can be emptied again in an energy consuming manner. In the inflated condition, the shoulder air bags are supported on the driver's shoulder regions and support a protective helmet from below against a lateral tilting.

Abstract: Collision-protection devices for vehicle passengers, are disclosed which include a gas cushion which is connected to a gas generator and inflates under sensor control in the event of an accident and hence protects the body of a vehicle passenger from a collision causing injury, e.g., against the instrument panel or windscreen. The gas cushion has, in this instance, one or more escape openings. According to the invention, the escape opening points towards an open cover flap when the gas cushion is inflated, which cover flap, in the closed state, covers the folded-up gas cushion. Only once a predetermined pressure has been exceeded does the cover flap free the escape opening to enable gas to be discharged in an escape flow distributed over an area of the gas cushion surface.

Abstract: A tripping device for a safety device, such as a lateral air bag for protecting vehicle occupants in the event of a side crash evaluates for the purpose of reliable tripping of the safety device in the event of a dangerous side crash and effectively avoiding spurious tripping, the signals of a deformation sensor arranged in the lateral region of the vehicle, and a transverse acceleration sensor arranged on the vehicle longitudinal axis. In the event of the presence of a deformation signal, an acceleration evaluator is started and the tripping sensitivity is increased. The deformation rate is determinable from the signal of the deformation sensor, and an increase in the tripping sensitivity is stronger in the event of a crash when the deformation rate is higher.

Abstract: In an impact protection cushion which can be accommodated in the steering wheel region for protection of the vehicle driver, a tearing seam is provided which joins the cushion upper part, which moves forward upon inflation, to the cushion lower part fastened to a fixed vehicle part. This arrangement prevents any radiating forward movement of parts of the cushion upper part, in particular, of a central region laying opposite the gas inflow opening in the cushion lower part without restraining straps.

Abstract: A safety device is provided for vehicles whose passenger compartment has at least one closable opening, such as a roof opening and side window. The safety device is provided with a sensor system which detects decelerations in the driving speed occurring in the driving direction and activates a closing device assigned to the closing element of the opening if a deceleration exceeds a predetermined value. As a result, in the event of an accident the vehicle occupants are prevented from being thrown out of the vehicle through the opening or injured by the entry of foreign bodies. The closing device is preferably provided with an energy store which, on being activated in the event of a hazard, brings about a rapid closing movement of the closing element.
