  • Publication number: 20130139597
Abstract: Embodiments of the present invention provide a method for non-contact detection techniques of mechanical vibrations utilizing a radio frequency system incorporating multiple carrier wavelengths. The new detection method measures multiple harmonic pairs at a carrier frequency and improves the detection accuracy and reliability by first inspecting the Bessel function coefficient of each harmonic and then determining the harmonic amplitude. The original mechanical vibration can then be reconstructed. Embodiments can be used to realize sensing of complex non-sinusoidal vibrations using a wavelength division sensing technique and allow non-contact detection through walls, smoke, fog or other low visibility environments with the advantage of longer range detection and easy integration at a low cost.

  • Publication number: 20130134263
Abstract: Embodiments of the subject invention relate to an air vehicle and a power source. Embodiments can operate at reasonable power levels for hovering and withstanding expected wind gusts. Embodiments can have a diameter less than 15 cm. Embodiments can have one or more smooth (continuous curvature) surface and can be operated using electromagnetic and electrohydrodynamic principles. The wingless design of specific embodiments can allow operation with no rotating or moving components. Additional embodiments can allow active response to the surrounding flow conditions. The issue of low lift to drag ratio and degradation of airfoil efficiency due to the inability of laminar boundary layers attachment can also be significantly reduced, or eliminated. The electromagnetic force can be generated by applying a pulsed (alternating/rf) voltage between a set of grounded and powered electrodes separated by a polymer insulator, dielectric, or other material with insulating properties.

  • Publication number: 20130137847
Abstract: An embodiment of the invention is directed to a biorenewable thermoplastic, poly(dihydroferulic acid) (PHFA), which is an effective polyethylene terephthalate (PET) mimic. In another embodiment of the invention, a biorenewable thermoplastic copolymer, poly(dihydroferulic acid-co-ferulic acid) is an effective polystyrene mimic. The PHFA and the copolymer can be prepared by the homocondensation of acetyldihydroferulic acid or the copolymerization of acetyldihydroferulic acid with acetylferulic acid, which are monomers that can be synthesized from starting materials isolated from lignin, rice bran, or other biorenewable sources.

  • Publication number: 20130129633
Abstract: Multimodal nanoparticles are nanoparticles containing contrast agents for PAT and one or more of luminescence imaging, x-ray imaging, and/or MRI. The multimodal nanoparticles can have a dielectric core comprising an oxide with a metal coating on the core. The particles can be metal speckled. The multimodal nanoparticles can be used for therapeutic purposes such as ablation of tumors or by neutron capture in addition to use as contrast agents for imaging.

  • Publication number: 20130106465
Abstract: Embodiments of the invention relate to an input-powered comparator. Embodiments of the invention also pertain to an active diode that includes an input-powered comparator and a switch. In a specific embodiment, the input-powered comparator only consumes power when an input source provides sufficiently high voltage. Embodiments of the active diode can be used in an energy harvesting system. The comparator can be powered by the input and the system can be configured such that the comparator only consumes power when the input is ready to provide power to the load or energy storage element. In a specific embodiment, when there is no input, or the input is too low for harvesting, the comparator does not draw any power from the energy storage element (e.g., battery or capacitor) of the system.

  • Publication number: 20130095147
Abstract: A bioactive sol-gel solution includes a biocompatible polymer, a gelable inorganic base material, and at least one calcium and phosphorous molecular species. The base material can be an alkoxide, such as TEOS. The polymer acts as a viscosity modifier to the sol or gel, increases the viscosity range over which fibers can be sprayed or spun, and broadens the time period over which fibers can be sprayed or spun. A bioactive glass composite can be formed from the bioactive sol-gel solution, including a fibrous form. Fibers can serve as a scaffolds for cell growth and in the repair of hard or soft tissue defects.
