  • Method for measuring starter motor current to determine engine status

    Abstract: A measuring method for vehicles equipped with an internal combustion engine, the engine including a starter battery and a driven staffer motor used when an attempt is made to start the engine, is disclosed. According to the method, a voltage across a measuring shunt inserted in a current circuit between the battery and the starter motor is repeatedly measured, at a sampling rate, during each revolution of a crankshaft of the engine during activation of the starter motor. Corresponding values of a current delivered from the starter battery to the starter motor are derived from voltage measuring results. Values of the current are registered in a memory of a measuring computer. The registered values are used to establish a status of the combustion engine and its starting system. A value of a derivative of a rotational speed of the combustion engine crankshaft is obtained from the registered values.

    Abstract: A device for making current measurements used in determining the charging status of a vehicle storage battery, comprising a ground conductor connected between one pole of the storage battery and the ground contact. The pole is connected via electrical conductors to a sensor having a source of electric power for providing at least one electric current to the ground connector. Values which are deducted from the current flowing through the ground conductor are provided to a microprocessor to determine the charging status of the battery.

  • Sure-start device for internal combustion engines

    Abstract: A device for assuring start of an internal combustion engine (1) comprises an electrical machine (3) drivingly connected to the engine crankshaft (2). The machine can operate both as a motor and as a generator and it is controlled by a control unit (4) including a current director (8). With the aid of the control unit, the functions of the electrical machine can be switched between full generator function and full motor function within one rotation of the crankshaft to make possible full motor power during the compression stroke and full generator power during the power stroke.
