    Abstract: A spectrometer comprises a plurality of isolated optical channels comprising a plurality of isolated optical paths. The isolated optical paths decrease cross-talk among the optical paths and allow the spectrometer to have a decreased length with increased resolution. In many embodiments, the isolated optical paths comprise isolated parallel optical paths that allow the length of the device to be decreased substantially. In many embodiments, each isolated optical path extends from a filter of a filter array, through a lens of a lens array, through a channel of a support array, to a region of a sensor array. Each region of the sensor array comprises a plurality of sensor elements in which a location of the sensor element corresponds to the wavelength of light received based on an angle of light received at the location, the focal length of the lens and the central wavelength of the filter.

    Abstract: Devices and methods are disclosed for determining relative motion. In one implementation, an interferometer is provided. The interferometer may include a body, a light source configured to project a coherent light to an opposing surface, a plurality of pairs of light detectors configured to convert reflections of the coherent light into photocurrents, and a processor. The processor may be configured to detect changes in the photocurrents, wherein a first change in the photocurrents, which occurs in response to a relative motion between the body and the opposing surface, represents a motion signal, and a second change in the photocurrents represents a noise signal. The processor may also determine the relative motion between the body and the opposing surface based on the first change in the photocurrents when a ratio between a power of the motion signal and a power of the noise signal is below about 10.

    Abstract: A protective sheath having a closed end and an open end is sized to receive a hand held spectrometer. The spectrometer can be placed in the sheath to calibrate the spectrometer and to measure samples. In a calibration orientation, an optical head of the spectrometer can be oriented toward the closed end of the sheath where a calibration material is located. In a measurement orientation, the optical head of the spectrometer can be oriented toward the open end of the sheath in order to measure a sample. To change the orientation, the spectrometer can be removed from the sheath container and placed in the sheath container with the calibration orientation or the measurement orientation. Accessory container covers can be provided and placed on the open end of the sheath with samples placed therein in order to provide improved measurements.

In one implementation, an interferometer for measuring rotational movement includes a housing and a light source within the housing configured to project coherent light toward a non-coded surface of an object. The interferometer further includes at least one optical element configured to modify the projected coherent light in a manner accounting for a rotation of the object. The interferometer also includes at least one sensor within the housing including at least one light detector configured to detect reflections of the modified projected coherent light from the opposing non-coded surface as the object rotates relative to the housing. The interferometer further includes at least one processor configured to receive input from the at least one sensor and determine an amount of rotation of the object around the at least one rotational axis.
