The present invention is a composition comprising Metoprolol succinate or its pharmaceutically acceptable derivatives thereof and the composition releases the drug over 24 hours. The composition further comprises hydrophilic polymer matrix based tablets. The present invention describes a sustained release tablet comprising sustained release matrix comprising of gelling agents comprising at least one hydrophilic polymer with one or more gum and gum derivatives.
