  • Patent number: 7082007
Abstract: A disc drive includes a transducer having a separate element for writing information and a separate element for reading information to and from the disc. In a disc drive designated to read and write long sequential records, the track misregistration budget is reduced to account for previously written tracks not being encroached on one side. An initial track is written. Subsequent tracks are written after a seek in one direction. The subsequent track is written so that the initially written track is overwritten to one side and leaves a track having a width substantially equal to the width of the read element. Records can be written into data bands of a selected number of tracks. A guard band is left between groups of data bands so that data on tracks in subsequent data bands are not overwritten.

  • Patent number: 6940671
Abstract: Systems and methods are provided through which a time domain equalized signal-to-noise-ratio (ESNR) of an electronic device is determined by executing ESNR determining firmware in the electronic device. The ESNR is used to perform rejection/acceptance testing of the electronic device during manufacturing of the device, and/or to perform read channel tuning and optimization. In one embodiment, determination of the ESNR includes both phase level retry and global level retry.

  • Patent number: 6853511
Abstract: A number of data pairs, each data pair comprises a write-to-read track misregistration (WRTMR) value and an average position error margin (APE) value, are determined for a data storage device. Each of the data pairs is associated with a unique predetermined non-repeatable runout (NRRO) error in the data storage device. Each of the predetermined NRRO errors is caused by subjecting the data storage device to a unique NRRO error stimulus. An ideal APE margin is then determined for the data storage device by using the data pairs to extrapolate an APE margin corresponding to a WRTMR value of zero.

  • Publication number: 20040225933
Abstract: A computer process establishes data frequencies for recording data in zones of a zone bit recording medium in a disc drive. At least three data points are identified for each zone correlating data frequencies and corresponding bit error rates, and a slope of a curve between each two data points is calculated. The slopes are averaged, and the data frequency is calculated based on the average slope. If a difference between the average and default slopes exceeds a first threshold value, or if a spread of the slopes exceeds a second threshold value, the data frequency is calculated based on the average slope and the default slope. In one embodiment, each of the three data points is generated by recording data in the zone at each of three selected data frequencies, reading the recorded data, and calculating bit error rates based on the recorded and read data.

  • Patent number: 6735029
Abstract: A method and apparatus for obtaining optimum parameter values for a read channel employed in a disc drive storage system are provided in which data having a known pattern is written on a disc surface of the disc drive storage system. The data written on the disc surface is then read to obtain a readback signal. The readback signal is passed through the read channel. A readback signal response is obtained at an output test point of the read channel. The readback signal response at the output test point is compared with a target response of the read channel at the output test point. The comparison is carried out using frequency spectral analysis. At least one parameter of the read channel is adjusted if the readback signal response substantially differs from the target response.

  • Patent number: 6583942
Abstract: A method and data storage device determine an equalized signal-to-noise ratio in the storage device. The equalized signal-to-noise ratio is determined by generating an analog read signal, passing the read signal through an equalizer in the storage device, and sampling the equalized signal using an analog-to-digital converter in the storage device. The samples from the analog-to-digital converter are then used in the equalized signal-to-noise calculation.

  • Publication number: 20030016461
Abstract: The thermal decay of data written to a magnetic mass storage medium is determined by measuring and analyzing the time-domain equalized-signal-to-noise ratio (ESNR) and equalized signal-to-total-distortion noise ratio (ESTDR) of written data. In some embodiments, a test track and a reference track are initialized from data. Subsequently, the reference track is re-initialized from the test data, and the time-domain ESNR and/or ESTDR measurements are made of the test track and the reference track, at predetermined time intervals. Later, the time-domain ESNR and ESTDR measurements are analyzed to determine the thermal decay of the data written. In another embodiment of the present invention, the ESNR and/or ESTDR measurements includes reading the data through a non-return-to-zero bus in phases, in which the phases are selected in sequence.

  • Patent number: 6456213
Abstract: Information handling systems, disc drives, and methods for digitizing a readback waveform for testing a hard disc drive are disclosed. An information. handling system, such as a disc drive, includes a base, a disc stack rotatably attached to the base, and an actuator assembly movably attached to the base. Attached to one end of the actuator assembly is one or more transducers. Attached to the other end of the actuator is a voice coil that forms a portion of a voice coil motor. Magnets attached to the base form the other portion of the voice coil motor. An analog readback signal is reconstructed for use in testing a disc drive by digitizing a waveform generated within a read channel arrangement to produce digitized waveform data. The analog readback signal is then determined as a function of the digitized waveform data.
