  • Patent number: 6786507
Abstract: A hybrid gas generator comprises a chamber that contains pressurized fluid and that is sealed off by a rupturable membrane, and a pyrotechnical propellant charge that ruptures the membrane when it is ignited. The gas generator further comprises a nozzle wall that is arranged between the propellant charge and the membrane and that has at least one passage opening through which combustion products generated upon ignition of said pyrotechnical propellant charge flow towards the membrane. The passage opening has such a shape and is oriented with respect to the membrane in such a way that, when the membrane is ruptured, there are formed sections of said membrane that remain all connected to an edge of the membrane.

The propellant charge housing is connected to the outer housing at a location outside of the pressure chamber and a longitudinal axis of the propellant charge housing extends at a right angle to a longitudinal axis of the outer housing. The generator also has an axial outflow opening situated at one axial end of the outer housing. The outer housing has a circumferential wall with a radial insertion opening for introducing the propellant charge housing.

  • Publication number: 20010026064
Abstract: A vehicle occupant restraint system has a gas generator and a gas bag. A method for inflating a gas bag for restraining an occupant comprises the following steps: providing a gas generator for producing gas which is flowingly connected to the gas bag, providing at least one propellant charge within the gas generator, providing at least one igniter within the gas generator, the gas generator blowing gas into the gas bag over more than one second, preferably over more than three seconds, in order to achieve a high service time.

  • Patent number: 6042146
Abstract: The invention relates to a device for filling a restraint device, in particular an impact cushion (airbag) for the protection of the occupants of a motor vehicle, with the following features. The restraint device is filled by an inert gas or gas mixture stored in a pressure container; the pressure container has an outlet opening which is closed by a burstable membrane; a module for opening the membrane is associated with the outlet opening; the module has an ignition unit; the igniter case is surrounded by a toroidal propellant chamber; for the ignition of the propellant stored in the propellant chamber, the igniter case has, in addition to axial nozzles, further nozzles directed radially outwards and finally a flow control is provided which directs the hot gas, produced by the propellant, onto the membrane.

  • Patent number: 5601309
Abstract: A hybrid gas generator for vehicle safety, systems, in particular airbag inflating and seat belt tensioning systems or pyrotechnical isolating switches for disconnecting the vehicle electrical system from the vehicle battery in the event of an impact accident, is described, whereby a moving piston is provided to destroy the bursting diaphragm which closes off the compressed gas container. This piston is moved towards the bursting diaphragm by igniting an ignition system whereby according to this invention the piston has a flange-shaped projection which is located against a shoulder on the internal surface of a sleeve facing the piston and is designed such that when the ignition system is ignited the flange-shaped projection shears off. Advantageously, the operating pressure in the combustion chamber of the hybrid gas generator according to this invention can thus be determined by the area of the shearing surface on the flange-shaped projection.

  • Patent number: 5586783
Abstract: A hybrid gas generator includes a pyrotechnic gas generator joined to a high-pressure vessel which is sealed with a sealing disk composed of a substance which chemically reacts with propellant gas produced in use so that the sealing disk is opened with an advantageously reduced acoustic pressure. The propellant gas is chemically reactive and is produced from a propellant composition which is present in a surplus amount and which is composed of a propellant which is oxidizable and at least one oxidant for oxidizing the propellant. The propellant gas attacks the sealing disk chemically and thermally, and continuously burns through it to release the gas from the high-pressure vessel into a mixing chamber in the pyrotechnic gas generator.
