The driving means also has a motor and gearing, where the cams are driven by the motor, and the application of force by the two cams to the striker carrier takes place on opposite sides of a linear axis of movement of the striker so as to move the striker carrier and striker along the linear axis of movement.

By actuating the actuator out of the initial position in a first direction the ratchet is raised by the actuating element for an opening assistance function, and by actuating the actuator out of the initial position in a second direction opposite the first direction, the actuating element is coupled to the latch and the latch is moved from the pre-catch position into the main catch position for a closing assistance function with the actuating element being coupled to the latch by a step-down gear.
