Also disclosed is a method for prognosing and/or diagnosing a type II diabetes mellitus disease for classification of a subject into risk groups, wherein the gene expression level of the ADIPOQ gene and/or of a gene, the expression of which has linear statistical correlation with that of the ADIPOQ gene, is determined and the subject is subsequently classified into risk groups, taking said gene expression level into account.
