  • Patent number: 6867160
Abstract: By controlling the hold up times and temperatures for mixing the components of aluminum, titanium and magnesium based catalyst for solution polymerization it is possible to prepare a catalyst having a high activity, which prepares high molecular weight polyolefins. Generally, catalyst loses activity and produces lower molecular weight polymer at higher temperatures. The catalyst of the present invention permits comparable polymers to be produced at higher reaction temperatures.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: November 1, 2000
Date of Patent: March 15, 2005
    Assignee: Nova Chemicals (International) S.A.
Inventors: Jesus Vela Estrada, Vaclav George Zboril
  • Patent number: 6723677
Abstract: By controlling the hold up times, concentrations and temperatures for mixing the components of aluminum, titanium and magnesium based catalyst for solution polymerization it is possible to prepare a catalyst having a high activity, which prepares high molecular weight polyolefins. Generally, a catalyst loses activity and produces lower molecular weight polymer at higher temperatures. The catalyst of the present invention permits comparable polymers to be produced with higher catalyst activity and at higher reaction temperatures by increasing the concentration of the components used during the preparation of the catalyst.
    Type: Grant

  • Patent number: 6319996
Abstract: A dual shear mixing element for use in a chemical reactor. The device may be used in processes where liquids of different temperatures need to be thoroughly mixed in a short period of time and solute must stay in solution. The present invention is particularly useful in the solution polymerization of polyolefins, especially in the medium pressure process for the preparation of linear low density polyethylene.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: November 12, 1999
Date of Patent: November 20, 2001
    Assignee: Nova Chemical (International) S.A.

  • Patent number: 6024483
Abstract: A dual shear mixing element includes an auger and an impeller for use in a chemical reactor. The device may be used in processes where liquids of different temperatures need to be thoroughly mixed in a short period of time and solute must stay in solution. The present invention is particularly useful in the solution polymerization of polyolefins, especially in the medium pressure process for the preparation of linear low density polyethylene.

  • Patent number: 4082880
Abstract: A paper-like thermoplastic film and a process for making it are disclosed. The process involves extruding a mixture of (a) 70-98% by weight of a polyethylene having a maximum melt flow index of 5 decigrams per minute and (b) 2-30% by weight of inorganic lamellar filler particles, e.g., mica, the largest dimension of said particles being less than 150 microns, through a circular die, in the form of seamless tubing, continuously withdrawing the tubing from the point of extrusion, and expanding and simultaneously cooling the tubing while in the plastic formative state at a temperature above the melting temperature to a blow up ratio in the range of from 1.2:1 to 10:1.
