    Abstract: An apparatus for converting rotary motion developed by a power source, such as an alternating current motor, into linear motion for use in accelerating a carriage in a reciprocal manner in a work treatment area of a cut-off machine. The apparatus includes a power train for transferring the power from the power source to a rack attached to the carriage. The power train includes a drive unit having a drive pulley, an idler pulley and an endless drive belt disposed about the pulleys. The drive belt engages the rack wherein activation of the power source results in motion of the rack which correspondingly moves the carriage.
