  • Publication number: 20240256269
Abstract: Techniques for preventing deadlock when upgrading a plurality of instances of a software service that is distributed across multiple different computing zones. Upgrade software executing on a cloud computer system receives an upgrade request to upgrade the plurality of instances. Respective upgrade processes are initiated in parallel. Node acquisition portions of the respective upgrade processes have a constraint on parallelization, as they are performed using a common upgrade procedure in which a given instance is upgraded by acquiring nodes in different ones of the computing zones according to a specified order. After acquiring the nodes according to the specified order, an updated instance is deployed to the acquired nodes to update the given instance. The acquiring of the nodes may be performed by node-securing pods in some embodiments, with the specified order enforced with affinity and anti-affinity rules.

  • Publication number: 20240193154
Abstract: Techniques are disclosed that pertain to deploying immutable instances of a system. A computer system may maintain an active generation value that indicates an immutable instance of a database system that is permitted to write data to a database. The computer system may deploy a first immutable instance of the database system and update the active generation value to permit the first immutable instance to write data to the database. The computer system may receive a request to deploy a second immutable instance of the database system that includes an update not found in the first immutable instance. The computer system may deploy the second immutable instance and update the active generation value to cause the first immutable instance to cease writing data to the database and to permit the second immutable instance to write data to the database.

  • Patent number: 11669510
Abstract: Technology for tracking changes to a database and providing the changes to a subscribing computing device. In an illustrative implementation, a method may involve subscribing a computing device to changes of a portion of a multi-tenant database and accessing a plurality of change events stored in a log of the multi-tenant database in parallel. The method may further involve storing the plurality of change events in a persistent data store separate from the multi-tenant database and processing the plurality of change events to create an ordered set of change events. The ordered set of change events may then be provided to the computing device that subscribed to the changes.

  • Patent number: 9479585
Abstract: A clustered network storage system includes a policy based storage efficiency management framework to allow users to more efficiently manage storage efficiency attributes on a plurality of storage objects in the clustered network storage system. The storage efficiency management framework includes a policy database for storing a plurality of polices, each of which includes a plurality of attributes. Each storage object in the clustered network storage system is assigned a policy. Storage efficiency operations can then be initiated by a storage efficiency engine according to the policies assigned to the storage objects by sending a single trigger to each node in the clustered network storage system and the storage efficiency engine determining on which storage objects to perform the storage efficiency operations.

  • Patent number: 9146780
Abstract: A clustered network storage system includes a management module and a resource allocation mechanism configured to allow remote management of node resources from the management module while preventing resource over-commitment due to the remote management. Preventing resource over-commitment includes conditionally granting access to the resources of a node according to a credit based system. Preventing resource over-commitment further includes scheduling jobs that access the resources of the node according to a prioritization scheme.

  • Patent number: 8819383
Abstract: One or more techniques and/or systems are provided for non-disruptively addressing misalignment between a virtual data format and an underlying data format. Virtual data, such as a guest operating system of a virtual machine, may be stored within a virtual structure, such as a virtual machine disk, according to a virtual data format. The virtual structure may be stored within a storage device according to a storage data format. If misalignment is detected, then a new data container may be created within the storage device. A shim, sized according to a misalignment offset, may be inserted into the new data container in order to align the new data container with the storage device. Virtual data may be migrated from the virtual structure to the new data container to achieve alignment. During the migration, the virtual data may remain available from the virtual structure (e.g., a virtual machine may still execute).

  • Publication number: 20140136483
Abstract: Method and system is provided for managing metadata for a plurality of data containers that are stored at one or more storage volumes in a storage system. The metadata is collected from one or more storage volumes and then provided to a catalog module. The catalog module pre-processes the metadata and then generates a searchable data structure. The searchable data structure may then be used to respond to a user request for information regarding the storage system.

  • Patent number: 8321386
Abstract: A system and method are provided for estimating compressibility of data in a storage device. This is accomplished by actually running a compression algorithm on at least one data element in a storage device, without necessarily storing the compressed data. By this feature, the results of the compression may be compared with the original data element, to gauge an extent to which a compression algorithm is effective in compressing data in the storage device. To this end, in various embodiments, a user may be better able to estimate compression algorithm effectiveness before actually implementing the same.
