  • Patent number: 8882499
Abstract: An orthodontic appliance includes a flexible vesica containing a fluid, and a support structure supporting the vesica relative to the patient's dental anatomy. The support structure holds the vesica in compression against selected teeth, so that the fluid within the vesica exerts a therapeutic pressure on the teeth. For example, the support structure can include an arch-shaped trough to support a tubular vesica. The fluid can be an incompressible material, such as glycerin or water.

  • Patent number: 6935859
Abstract: A method for fabricating a removable orthodontic appliance with lingual springs using a model of a patient's teeth. One or more ideal reference grooves (e.g., a central ideal reference groove, occlusal ideal reference groove, or gingival ideal reference groove) are cut into the lingual surfaces of the model teeth reflecting the desired, ideal positions of these teeth after orthodontic treatment. The orthodontic appliance is then cast on the model with the stem of each lingual spring stem embedded in the appliance and the tooth-contacting end of each lingual spring positioned in the reference groove of a model tooth.

  • Patent number: 6604943
Abstract: A method and apparatus for orthodontic treatment employs a cast mass-type appliance with a labial bow and combinations of labial and lingual springs to produce multiple coupled forces on selected teeth. The lingual spring has a stem embedded in the appliance and a plurality of pairs of activation loops at its active, tooth-contacting end, which extend laterally outward from the longitudinal axis of the stem. The labial spring has a pair of lateral wings for attachment to a labial bow, and one or more rabbit ears extending selectively either occlusally or gingivally along the labial surface of the tooth.

  • Patent number: 6431861
Abstract: An inventive orthodontic archwire and method of use is described. The inventive archwire includes a central curved portion and first and second end portions extending from opposing ends of the central curved portion. The central curved portion includes a middle section that arcuately projects one of upwardly and downwardly relative to a reference plane. The central curved portion further includes first and second intermediate sections extending from opposing ends of the middle section, each of said first and second intermediate sections arcuately projecting in an orientation opposite to that of the arcuate middle section. The orthodontic archwire may preferably exhibit a relatively high ultimate tensile strength of between about 275 KSI and 330 KSI. The first and second end portions may extend from the central curved portion so as to lie substantially parallel to or coplanar with the reference plane of the orthodontic archwire and/or substantially non-convergently.

  • Patent number: 6254383
Abstract: An improved dental elastic handling system is disclosed. The system is directed to the use of one or more assemblies which each include a plurality of elastics interconnected to a runner. The system may comprise an inventive dispenser having a tubular member with a channel therethrough for receiving an elastics runner assembly. The tubular member may include a slot extending from one end to a mid-portion. A cutting edge may be provided at the distal end of the slot. Upon positioning an elastics/runner assembly within the channel of the dispenser, the elastics will extend through the slot a predetermined distance to facilitate grasping by a placement device. By opposing advancement of the dispenser and/or elastics/runner assembly the elastics may selectively contact the cutting edge of the dispenser so as to facilitate disengagement of the elastics. The arrangement provides for enhanced carrying, cutting and installation of dental elastics.
