    Abstract: A prosthetic heart valve replacement system and method aim to reduce the time duration of the patient on the heart-lung machine during surgery. In one embodiment, the invention uses a two rings (e.g., of Titanium) comprising a first outer anchoring ring installed in a first step in the patient annulus, e.g., by stapling (e.g., using NitinolĀ® staples), and a second inner valve ring which has apertures and to which the sewing cuff of prosthetic heart valve (e.g., of Dacron) is sutured around the sewing cuff. The suturing is expediently completed outside of the patient's body, parallel with the stapling of the anchoring ring in the patient annulus. The inner valve ring may have circumferential resiliency. The inner valve ring along with the fastened/sutured prosthetic valve is installed snugly (in a second step) to be captively retained concentrically within the already installed outer anchoring ring, to complete the heart valve replacement.

    Abstract: A hemostatic article, e.g., a sponge is pretreated with predetermined quantities of selected hemostatic agents to assist hemostasis in surgical or traumatic wounds. The hemostatic article is provided with a visible marking/indication of the strength of the hemostatic agent. The visible indication may be color coding, or, the marking could take the form 20%, 40%, 60% and, 80%. The hemostatic agent may be any substance assisting in hemostasis, may be in powder or fluid form, and may be one or more of Thrombin, Gelform, Fibrinogen, or other hemostatic substances. The hemostatic article could include at least one radio-opaque element which may take the form of a thread or a strip. Alternatively, a radio chip embedded in the hemostatic article may be used. The visible markings per se could be made radio-opaque, thereby obviating a separate radio-opaque element. The pretreated marked hemostatic articles are sterilized for medical use in any known manner.

    Abstract: A heart valve, and a technique for effecting valve replacement or repair, which partially or completely replaces the mitral (or tricuspid) valve with an autologous graft from the pericardium, fascia lata or even the dura mater, or a bovine or porcine pericardial or other synthetic sheet material equivalent thereof, preferably in a configuration which substantially restores the original anatomy of the heart including chordae tendineae attached to adjacent papillary muscles of the heart. Most preferably, a section of the patient's pericardium is cut to a shape including two leaflets, with each leaflet having a trabeculated tier of chordae tendineae terminating in a spear-shaped tab. The two leaflets are cut out as a single unit, and the two far ends are sutured together to yield a bileaflet valve having appended chordae and tabs.
