    Abstract: A tape guide is provided for use in routing a tape media, used in a computer or other application, along a pre-specified path of travel. The tape guide is oriented along a vertical axis and comprises three sections or components joined together to form an integral guide structure. Upper and lower sections both comprise frustoconical sections, the respective dimensions of the two frustoconical sections being equal to one another in a useful embodiment. A tape is wrapped around the guide, whereby the tape is directed along its path of travel. As the tape moves, the upper and lower sections apply downwardly and upwardly directed biasing forces, respectively, to maintain the moving tape in an equilibrium position in order to avoid contact between the edges of the tape and any guide structure.

    Abstract: A device for guiding a magnetic tape in a data storage drive including a cylindrical body rotatable about a longitudinal axis. The cylindrical body having opposing ends and defining a surface area for mating with a magnetic tape. A curved section at opposite ends of the cylindrical body is contiguous with the surface area of the cylindrical body. A plurality of vents in the cylindrical body allow air flow therethrough between the surface area and the tape. The amount of air flow between the cylindrical body and the tape produces varying frictional forces on the tape such that the tape is biased to a nominal position on the cylindrical body by air pressure on the tape resulting from the air flow interaction with the curved sections.

An upper section is provided with a concave surface that curves upward to a circular edge around the top of the guide. The guide also includes a cylindrical central section, and a frustoconical lower section having its smaller-diameter end contiguous with the cylindrical section. Thus, the lower section provides a tapered outer surface extending downwardly from the central section. A tape is wrapped around the guide, whereby the tape is directed along its path of travel. As the tape moves along its path of travel, the curved upper section and tapered frustoconical section apply downwardly directed and upwardly directed biasing forces, respectively.

    Abstract: A system of rollers and guides that adjust a wrap angle of tape around a guide in a tape cartridge. The system of rollers is an outer guide and an inner roller connected to a spindle via rigid arms. The tape extends around the reel and around a portion of the outer diameter of the outer guide. The inner roller rolls against the tape pack as the tape is wound or unwound around the reel. As the radius of the tape pack changes, position of the inner roller relative to the reel changes, causing the spindle to rotate. In turn, the rotation of the spindle causes a change in the position of the outer guide relative to the reel. As outer guide moves inwardly or outwardly relative to the reel, the wrap angle of the tape around the outer guide changes.
