  • Patent number: 8405931
Abstract: A magnetic writer includes a write pole configured such that the easy magnetic axis is parallel to the vertical length direction of the write pole tip and to the ABS of the recording media. The write pole tip can be a multilayer structure comprising alternating magnetic and nonmagnetic layers with a planar orientation substantially perpendicular to the ABS and with magnetic anisotropy parallel to the vertical length direction of the write pole tip. The alternating magnetic and nonmagnetic layers may be formed by electroplating on a conformal seedlayer in a trench, or by static off axis physical vapor deposition.

  • Patent number: 7914916
Abstract: High magnetic moment films FeCo(X, Y), where X is a transition metal element and Y is a rare earth element are formed using off-axis static deposition techniques. The films have tunable magnetic anisotropy from 0 Oe to greater than 500 Oe that are thermally stable beyond nominal photoresist curing temperatures. By using off-axis static deposited FeCo(X, Y) films as seed layers to normally deposited FeCo films, inplane anisotropy and the magnetic moment can be controlled for specific design needs. Epitaxial-like growth (column-to-column matching) from the off-axis static FeCo(X,Y) seed layers to normally deposited FeCo films is attributed to sustained anisotropy in the entire film.

  • Publication number: 20100214692
Abstract: The present disclosure provides a magnetic recording head for a data storage system having improved write field characteristics. In one example, an apparatus having magnetic properties is provided. The apparatus includes a pole, a shield, and a multilayer block positioned between the pole and the shield. The multilayer block includes a plurality of layers wherein at least one of the plurality of layers comprises a magnetic material. In one embodiment, the multilayer block provides an antiferromagnetic coupling between the pole and the shield such that a magnetization of the pole is in a first direction and a magnetization of the shield in a second direction that is substantially anti-parallel to the first direction.
