  • Patent number: 11613009
Abstract: A method including acquiring measurements representing torque applied to a connection between a first tubular and a second tubular, a rotational position of the first tubular relative to the second tubular, or both, obtaining a plurality of make-up parameters representing conditions under which the connection is fully made, generating a plurality of rules for connection evaluation based on the make-up parameters, and automatically evaluating the connection using a computer. Automatically evaluating includes applying machine learning, the plurality of rules, or a combination thereof to a dataset of the measurements. The method also includes recommending accepting or rejecting the connection based on the automatic evaluation.

  • Patent number: 10801280
Abstract: A tubular handling system and method, of which the system includes a power tong configured to engage and rotate an add-on tubular by applying a torque thereto, the power tong defining a central opening configured to receive the add-on tubular therethrough, a spider disposed at a rig floor, the spider being configured to support a tubular string, a lifting assembly coupled with the power tong and configured to move the power tong vertically with respect to the tubular string and the spider, and a control line guide coupled to the power tong. The control line guide is movable between an extended position in which the control line guide is configured to guide a control line into close proximity to the add-on tubular, and a retracted position in which the control line guide is configured to maintain a lateral control line clearance gap between the control line and the add-on tubular.

  • Publication number: 20180087334
Abstract: A tong for applying torque to a tubular and a method of using a tong, of which the tong includes a rotary ring defining an inner profile through which the tubular is received, the inner profile defining a plurality of pockets extending radially outward and a plurality of cam surfaces circumferentially between the plurality of pockets, and a plurality of engaging members disposed within the rotary ring. The plurality of engaging members are movable from a retracted position at least partially in the plurality of pockets to an engaging position in which the plurality of engaging members are positioned along the plurality of cam surfaces. The tong also includes a plurality of cam followers extending through the rotary ring, and a worm drive including a helical ridge. The plurality of cam followers engage the helical ridge so as to transmit a substantially tangential force to the rotary ring.

  • Publication number: 20100038094
Abstract: A method and apparatus are provided for installing control lines and pipe into a well. The pipe-holding spider that is normally mounted on the rig floor is adapted for easy disassembly and reassembly when the pipe slips within the spider are not engaged with the outer surface of the pipe string so that upon disassembly, a control line guide becomes vertically movable. The control line guide is adapted for being controllably elevated to a distance above the rig floor, thereby providing personnel access to a portion of the length of the pipe string below the elevated control line guide and above the rig floor for securing control line to the pipe string using a fastener.

  • Patent number: 7367403
Abstract: A method and apparatus are provided for installing control lines and pipe into a well. The pipe-holding spider that is normally mounted on the rig floor is supported by a table elevated above the rig floor. Supporting the spider on an elevated table provides personnel with access to a portion of the length of the pipe string below the elevated spider and above the rig floor for applying a fastener to secure the control line to the pipe string. The control line is supplied from above the spider and is positioned by a control line guide supported on the spider or a sleeve to pass through the spider outside the path of the pipe gripping members, such as slips.

  • Publication number: 20060278400
Abstract: A four-cornered, open frame, connected either to a top drive or to a traveling block, has an elevator at its lower end used to support the weight of the tubular string, and has a mud tool, a stabber, a guide, a spinner, a tong, a stabbing guide and a backup tong carried by the frame. A manipulator arm picks up a horizontal tubular, manipulates the tubular to vertical, and moves the tubular into the interior of the frame, allowing the tubular to be made up in the string while the string is being lowered into the wellbore.

  • Patent number: 6488323
Abstract: An apparatus for gripping tubular members in a single or multi-string arrangement about their outer diameter without causing surface damage or structural deformation to the tubular members, so that they may be axially rotated or secured against axial rotation. A generally cylindrical internal sleeve is contained within a molded flexible liner. One side of the internal sleeve is releasably attached to the flexible liner, forming an annular bladder-like structure within the flexible liner. Introduction of pressure into the bladder-like structure causes the flexible liner to inflate radially inward causing the flexible liner and torque transmitting bushing to thereby grip the tubular work piece within the new improved friction grip.

  • Patent number: 5842390
Abstract: A backup tong having an inner throat sized to accommodate a second pipe string while a first pipe string is held within the jaws of the tong is disclosed. The inventive backup tong facilitates operations on dual pipe strings by allowing the tong to grip not only the closer of two pipe strings, but also the farther of the pipe strings by allowing the nearer pipe string to reside in an inner throat of the backup tong, between the gripping members of the tong and the body of the backup tong, while the farther pipe string is held between the gripping members. The inventive backup tong thereby allows the operator to grip either of the pipe strings from a single side, eliminating the side-to-side movement (and corresponding time and risk of harm) which is required when using prior art backup tongs.
