Bipolar plates are provided and include an electrically conductive electrode element, a grid spaced apart from the electrode in proximity to the first side of the electrode element, positive active material in contact with the first side or second side of the electrode element and negative active material in contact with the first side or second side of the electrode element which is not in contact with the positive active material.
