    Abstract: In a method for generating pilot beacons for hard handoff over a border from a first environment to a second environment, the two environments using spread spectrum technology, a RF pilot signal may be received at an operational frequency used in at least the second environment. The RF signal may be downconverted to an IF pilot signal, filtered and then upconverted to a first reproduced RF pilot signal. The first reproduced RF pilot signal may be at a operational frequency used in a first environment, and may represent a pilot beacon for hard handoff between the first and second environments. The method and arrangement may be configured to receive a pilot beacon from one environment and to generate N pilot beacons, in that one environment, for up to N different operational frequencies used in another environment from which a mobile user is transiting, for hard handoff between the environments.

The device has at one end a sample port for introducing a sample and at the other end a bladder for drawing the sample to a measurement area. A channel carries the sample from the sample port to the measurement area, and a stop junction, between the measurement area and bladder, halts the sample flow. The desired measurement can be made by placing the device into a meter which measures a physical property of the sample—typically, optical transmittance—after it has interacted with a reagent in the measurement area.

    Abstract: Methods and devices are provided for detecting the application of a fluid sample onto a test strip surface when the test strip is inserted into an optical meter. In the subject methods, reflectance data is obtained from a portion of the optical meter in which the sample application region of the test strip is located, where the reflectance data covers a period of time ranging from a point at least prior to application of the sample to the strip to a point following application of the sample to the strip. The presence of the fluid sample on the test strip is then determined from the reflectance data. Also provided are optical meters that include optical means for obtaining reflectance data, where these optical means include at least an irradiation source and a light detector. The subject methods and devices find use with a variety of test strips, and are particularly suited for use with test strips that include a fluid movement means, such as a compressible bladder.

A polyunsaturated polymerized lipid layer is employed, which is anisotropic, has a member of a specific binding pair bound to an end of the lipids, and whose optical characteristics are modified upon complex formation between the specific binding pair member and its complementary member. By providing for polarized light, linear and/or circular, one can detect the presence of complex formation by the change in the optical characteristics of the film. Polarizers, analyzers, and wave plates are employed for providing for a light signal which can be analyzed and related to the presence of an analyte in a sample.
