    Abstract: A system and method for alerting a person riding on a vehicle of at least one location along the route of the vehicle is disclosed. The system includes a base station, mounted along a track of a railroad transportation system, wherein the base station emits a signal which contains a unique identification designation for a location along the system. The signal that is emitted by the base station is not detectible when the person riding on the vehicle is not present in the vicinity of the base station. The system also includes a personal electronic device adapted to be carried by the user. The personal electronic device is capable of detecting the unique identification designation being transmitted by the base station.
