    Abstract: A system and method are disclosed for protecting funds associated with a stored-value instrument, such as a gift card, by way of a non-limiting example. The system and method provide an ability to assign a deactivated status to a stored-value instrument in response to a deactivation request. The system and method further provide an ability to change the status of a deactivated instrument in response to a reactivation request. The reactivation request includes reactivation information assigned for the instrument in response to the deactivation request. The system and method maintain information on the status of an instrument, which status can be used as part of an authorization process to authorize a transaction in which the instrument is used.
