  • Publication number: 20080120016
Abstract: A control system for adjusting levels of emissions exiting an engine includes a NOx sensor that generates a NOx signal in response to oxides of nitrogen (NOx) in an exhaust gas and a control module that communicates with the cam phaser. The rotational position of the cam phaser controls an actuation time when the camshaft opens the exhaust valve during rotation of the camshaft. The control module further receives the NOx signal, and calculates a NOx level of the exhaust gas based on the NOx signal. The control module compares the NOx level to a predetermined threshold range and adjusts the cam phaser to achieve a rotational position that releases a desired level of NOx from the engine when the NOx level exceeds the predetermined threshold range. The control module further stores the rotational position in a storage device when the NOx level is within the predetermined threshold range.

  • Publication number: 20080103679
Abstract: The present invention provides an accessory drive system for a vehicle. The vehicle includes a plurality of accessories, and a primary internal combustion engine adapted to drive the vehicle. The accessory drive system includes an auxiliary internal combustion engine operatively connected to each of the plurality of accessories. The auxiliary internal combustion engine is the exclusive source of power for the accessories and is configured to meet the power requirements of the accessories in a fuel efficient manner.

  • Patent number: 7305825
Abstract: A turbine temperature control (TTC) system for regulating operation of an engine to control a temperature of a forced air induction device. The system includes a sensor that is responsive to an exhaust gas temperature and that generates a signal. A control module determines a temperature based on the temperature signal and compares the temperature to a threshold temperature. The control module regulates operation of the engine to decrease the temperature when the temperature exceeds the threshold temperature.

  • Publication number: 20070221149
Abstract: Provided is an auxiliary cam phaser hydraulic circuit for an internal combustion engine having an engine driven hydraulic pump and at least one cam phaser in fluid communication with a cam phaser control valve. The auxiliary cam phaser hydraulic circuit includes a reservoir containing fluid and an auxiliary hydraulic pump in fluid communication with the reservoir and operable to pressurize the fluid and communicate the fluid under pressure to a cam phaser feed passage. The cam phaser feed passage is in fluid communication with the cam phaser control valve, which operates to selectively and variably communicate the fluid to the cam phaser. A method of starting and operating an internal combustion engine is also provided. An internal combustion engine incorporating the auxiliary cam phaser hydraulic circuit is also disclosed.

  • Patent number: 7137386
Abstract: A fuel control system for a diesel engine includes a first module that calculates a block learn multiplier (BLM) based on a feedback signal during a closed-loop fuel control period. A second module adjusts a base fueling rate of the diesel engine based on the BLM during an open-loop fuel control period.

  • Patent number: 7021281
Abstract: An internal combustion engine idle speed control system includes a first valve control mechanism that adjusts a first operating parameter of a first cylinder valve. A control module determines an idle speed error and generates a first control signal to the first valve control mechanism to adjust the first operating parameter. The first control signal is based on the idle speed error.

  • Patent number: 6997149
Abstract: A spark control system and method for an engine having an intake cam phaser and/or an exhaust cam phaser, and having engine sensors, comprises a principal calculation module that determines a principal spark advance value based upon actual rotational position of the cam phasers, and an output calculation module that determines an output spark advance value based upon the principal spark advance value and spark modifiers determined from the engine sensors. The actual rotational positions of the cam phasers are obtained from predictive calculations or rotational position sensors on the cam phasers. The principal calculation module includes two separately calibrated look-up tables, indexed by the actual rotational position of the cam phasers, whose outputs are scaled and combined to determine the principal spark advance. The spark modifiers include temperature base, coolant, induction air temperature, equivalence ratio, and piston slap.
