  • Patent number: 10568066
Abstract: Various mechanisms for paging link-budget-limited (LBL) devices are disclosed, including: (1) transmitting paging message with non-conventional paging identifier; (2) transmitting paging message(s) with increased power; (3) repeating transmission of paging message to support combining at receiver. Various mechanisms for UE device to signal LBL status are disclosed, including, transmitting status flag or special value of DRX cycle to network node as part of tracking area update and/or attach request. The network node informs a base station of the device's LBL status as part of a paging message. (The network node may, e.g., assign an S-RNTI to the LBL device from a reserved subset of S-RNTI space.) The base station invokes a paging enhancement mechanism when paging an LBL device. Alternatively, the base station may page UE devices without knowledge of LBL status, e.g., by counting paging attempts for a given UE, and boosting power after the Nth paging attempt.

  • Patent number: 10531507
Abstract: A device, system, and method estimate a link budget on a companion device. The method is performed at a first device connecting to a second device over a first connection and a network over a second connection, the second device connecting to the network over a third connection. The method includes receiving initiating data from the second device based on radio conditions associated with the third connection. The method includes, when the first device disconnects from the second device and establishes the second connection, determining an initial network metric value based on the initiating data that is used to estimate radio conditions associated with the second connection. The method includes selecting a data exchange mode of the first device based on the initial network metric value which is used until a further network metric is determined by the first device.

  • Patent number: 10512025
Abstract: A device sets an activity mode for a cellular connection. A method to set the activity mode is performed at a device located with a user that is configured to establish a network connection to a network. The method includes determining a status of the user, the status indicating an activity state or a non-activity state of the user. The method includes, when the status indicates the activity state, activating an activity mode on the device that restricts select types of mobile originating data traffic.

  • Patent number: 10334611
Abstract: Described is a user equipment (UE) that is connected to a network component, the user equipment and the network component configured with a carrier aggregation functionality. The UE performs a method that includes determining a primary component carrier and at least one secondary component carrier associated with the carrier aggregation functionality of the user equipment, determining a component carrier quality measurement (CQM) metric for each of the component carriers, when an uplink data packet is capable of being transmitted over the secondary component carrier, selecting one of the primary component carrier and the at least one secondary component carrier based on the CQM metrics, generating measurement data indicative of the selected component carrier to increase a probability to transmit the uplink data packet over the selected component carrier and transmitting the measurement data to the network component.

  • Patent number: 10187752
Abstract: Some embodiments relate to a user equipment device (UE), and associated methods for enabling the UE to estimate velocity of the UE based on cellular parameters. In some embodiments, a first velocity of a UE may be estimated based on a first set of parameters associated with one or more cellular based metrics. Doppler measurements may be performed in response to the first velocity exceeding a velocity threshold for at least a time period. In some embodiments, performing (or conducting) the Doppler measurements may be triggered by (e.g., in response to) the first velocity exceeding the velocity threshold for at least the first time period and receiving an indication from a motion processor of the UE that the UE is in a non-static state. In addition, a second velocity of the UE may be estimated based on the first set of parameters and the Doppler measurements.

  • Patent number: 10075817
Abstract: Some embodiments relate to a user equipment device (UE), and associated methods for enabling the UE to estimate motion of the UE based on cell type. In some embodiments, in response to determining that a serving cell of the UE is not a macro cell, a motion estimation algorithm may be disabled for at least a first time period and when the first time period lapses, the motion estimation algorithm may be partially enabled to estimate speed of the UE for at least a second time period. In response to the speed of the UE remaining above a speed threshold for at least the second time period, the motion estimation algorithm may be fully enabled. In response to the speed of the UE not remaining above the speed threshold for at least the second time period, the motion estimation algorithm may be disabled for at least a third time period.

  • Patent number: 9826559
Abstract: This disclosure relates to techniques for UEs (including link budget limited UEs) to improve communications performance with a cellular network. A UE may be configured to provide a request (for a first process executed by the UE) for a high-bandwidth connection to a base station of a cellular network during a first RRC connection. In some embodiments, the RRC connection is established by another process. In some embodiments, the UE is configured to receive signaling from the base station indicating that the base station cannot satisfy the high-bandwidth connection request and the UE is configured not to send or receive data for the high-bandwidth connection during the first RRC connection in response to the signaling. In some embodiments, the UE is configured to re-send the request on a second, subsequent RRC connection that is not established by the first process.

  • Patent number: 9807661
Abstract: This disclosure relates to cellular service recovery techniques using cell-specific cellular service history information for an accessory device. According to some embodiments, cellular service history information relating to cellular service loss occasions for each of one or more cells from which the accessory device has previously lost cellular service may be stored. It may be determined that cellular service loss is currently occurring from a cell for which cellular service history information relating to cellular service loss occasions is stored. Cellular service recovery may be attempted using the cellular service history information relating to cellular service loss occasions for the cell from which the current cellular service loss is occurring.
