  • Patent number: 4851183
Abstract: A nuclear reactor for generating electricity is disposed underground at the bottom of a vertical hole that can be drilled using conventional drilling technology. The primary coolant of the reactor core is the working fluid in a plurality of thermodynamically coupled heat pipes emplaced in the hole between the heat source at the bottom of the hole and heat exchange means near the surface of the earth. Additionally, the primary coolant (consisting of the working flud in the heat pipes in the reactor core) moderates neutrons and regulates their reactivity, thus keeping the power of the reactor substantially constant. At the end of its useful life, the reactor core may be abandoned in place. Isolation from the atmosphere in case of accident or for abandonment is provided by the operation of explosive closures and mechanical valves emplaced along the hole.

  • Patent number: 4625468
Abstract: Significant, life-saving protection from airborne, radioactive (fallout) particles due to nuclear explosions, nuclear reactor accidents, and other releases of radioactive particulate is provided by a double-wall tent structure quickly erectable over a central bench or hole. The tent structure includes tightly woven, rip-resistant fabric panels supported by tensile rods or wands, a tub floor extending into and lining a central trench or hole, and an exterior, light-reflecting, metalized, semi-transparent disposable membrane. The bottom circumferential edge of the outer membrane extends into a shallow trench or ditch, excavated around the perimeter of the inner tent structure. Dust particles settling onto the smooth exterior surface of the membrane slide off and are captured in the shallow ditch, thus minimizing direct or indirect radiation into the central trench or hole and its occupants.

  • Patent number: T101204
Abstract: A fast nuclear reactor is described which comprises a conical reactor core surrounding an embedded array of heat pipes of, per se, novel structure, carrying either moderator or nuclear fuel material as part of their working fluid. This reactor system is self-regulating, because an excessive increase in reactivity drives the fuel or moderator working fluid out of the conical core region, thereby reducing reactivity. The heat pipes are protected against burnout by a novel heat pipe envelope shape and internal wicking structure designed to increase the working fluid circulation speed with increasing heat transfer loads.
