  • Patent number: 7574138
Abstract: A device (D2) is dedicated to controlling degradation parameters associated with signals on channels with different wavelengths, possibly arranged in bands of channels, and transmitted by transmission lines (Lj) connecting nodes (Ni) of a transparent optical communication network. The device includes processing means (PM2) adapted, in the event of transmission of signals of at least two channels or bands of channels by at least one transmission line (Lj), to measure for each of said channels or each of said bands of channels, firstly, the value of a parameter representative of the degradation of the signals on the corresponding line (Lj) and, secondly, taking account of said measured values, a power profile to be imposed on the signals so that they have predetermined degradation parameter values.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: January 9, 2004
Date of Patent: August 11, 2009
    Assignee: Alcatel
    Inventors: Jean-Paul Faure, Vincent Bouder

  • Patent number: 6697189
Abstract: It is disclosed a system for gain equalization in an optical communication system, comprising a fiber link with a two-stage EDFA with an inter-stage access, and in the inter-stage a Dispersion Compensating Fiber, a Raman pump source (RMP) in the contra-propagating way, a Variable Optical Attenuator and a gain flattening filter. The Raman pump is adapted to provide a first gain slope with an opposite trend with respect to the filter and VOA, and is further adapted such that the pump power can be controlled so as to modify the gain slope and get the gain equalization.

  • Publication number: 20030020990
Abstract: It is disclosed a method and system for automatic gain equalization in a WDM optical communication system, which provides for using Automatic Gain Equalizers to pre-tilt the spectrum and get both gain flattening and Optical Signal to Noise Ratio flattening: the AGEs are periodically inserted in the amplification chain, for pre-compensating the tilt that will accumulate down the line (pre-emphasis). Optical Spectrum Monitors are placed some amplifiers downstream, measure the OSNR and send this data back to the relating AGE. For each wavelength the difference between the OSNR and the minimal OSNR over the spectrum is computed and added to the previous attenuation at this wavelength. The new attenuation spectrum is normalized and is used to control the AGE.
