  • Patent number: 4552082
Abstract: A method and an ocean-going vessel are disclosed for more effectively incinerating hazardous liquid wastes at sea. Intermodal shipping tank containers are filled at waste generation sites; transported to dockside and loaded above decks on an incinerator ship; taken out to sea and incinerated in horizontal, liquid burning type incinerators so that the effluents emerge horizontally. Wastes flow by gravity from containers into staging sumps located below decks, and then pumped to incinerator. Pollution abatement tanks, also below decks, collect spilled waste from containers, as well as overflow from staging sumps. Material collected in abatement tanks is pumped into staging sump, and pumped to incinerator. Fuel oil may be introduced into sumps for fueling incinerators to maintain incinerator operation when there is insufficient supply of waste. Effluents are sea-water scrubbed for cooling to eliminate thermal lift and carried promptly into sea.

  • Patent number: 4197914
Abstract: A system adapted for fighting a fire within areas of a ship that normally are inaccessible to conventional fire fighting equipment. The system includes a fluid carrying conduit supported on the underside of a hatch cover, connector structure for connecting a source of fluid to the conduit and a plurality of openings located along the conduit providing a field of coverage for the fluid which is discharged. The system is adapted both for automatic and manual operation, it may be used for fighting fires with water, fluids, gases and foams, and it may be used to sample ambient conditions within the cargo storing area. The system has particular applicability in use with containerships, but also may be used with vessels of all types which are equipped with hatch covers.

  • Patent number: 4023504
Abstract: The locking apparatus on a flatbed vehicle, etc., for engaging the corner fitting on a container carried thereby includes a shank with a crosshead which is moved into the corner fitting and is rotated 90.degree. to engage the locking device. The shank has an annular rack thereon. A gear segment engages this rack and is rotated manually to push the rack one way or the other to establish the desired axial position of the shank. On the distal end of the shank is a gear which engages a gear on a rotatable locking member. The locking member has teeth which engage the teeth of the rack to prevent axial movement of the rack and shank when the crosshead on the shank is in the locked position in the container corner fitting. The locking member is rotatable to move its teeth away from the rack and that rotation correspondingly rotates the shank.
