    Abstract: A process for rendering porous materials oleophilic and hydrophobic so as to improve their ability to immobilize oil comprising coating the surfaces of the material with a non-volatile solid hydrocarbon or fatty acid. In one form the hydrocarbon may be molten paraffin wax. It may also be a solution of wax or fatty acid in a volatile organic solvent such as hexane.
