  • Patent number: 7443821
Abstract: A method for optimizing clear channel assessment (CCA) parameters in a wireless local area network having an access point (AP) and at least one station begins by receiving a trigger condition. An upper bound and a lower bound for an energy detect threshold (EDT) parameter are determined. A value of the EDT parameter is calculated and is bound by the upper bound and the lower bound. Lastly, the EDT parameter is updated. The method can be performed at each station or at the AP, with the updated CCA parameters being signaled to each station associated with the AP.

  • Patent number: 7440418
Abstract: A method for accelerating discovery of access points (APs) in a wireless local area network begins by transmitting an advertisement packet by an AP via at least one channel other than a channel on which the AP transmits beacon signals. The advertisement packet is received by a station (STA), which then determines whether to associate to the transmitting AP. The advertisement packet can include reassociation information, such that the STA can associate to the AP based on the information in the advertisement packet, or timing information, such that the STA can tune to the AP and receive the AP's beacon without dwelling on the AP for an extended period of time.

  • Patent number: 7388929
Abstract: The present invention is related to a method and apparatus for providing service availability information to a user in a wireless communication system. After receiving a beacon signal from a base station, a WTRU measures a power level and an interference level of the beacon signal. A target SIR and a power offset for each service is pre-defined and stored in a memory of the WTRU. A processor calculates an estimated SIR for each service, and generates a service availability indicator by dividing the estimated SIR with a target SIR for each service. A user is informed of the availability of various services simply by looking at the display of the WTRU.

  • Patent number: 7376398
Abstract: A method for implementing a smart antenna in establishing association between a station (STA) and an access point (AP) in a wireless local area network begins by transmitting a beacon frame by the AP on one antenna beam. The beacon frame is received at the STA, which measures the signal quality of the beacon frame. The AP switches to a different antenna beam and repeats the method until the beacon frame has been transmitted on all antenna beams. The STA associates to the AP that transmits the beacon frame with the highest signal quality on one of its antenna beams. A similar method may be used in which the STA sends a probe request frame to the AP, which then responds with probe response frames sent on multiple antenna beams.

  • Publication number: 20080095185
Abstract: A method and apparatus for sending a channel quality indication (CQI) via a shared channel while a wireless transmit/receive unit (WTRU) is in a Cell_FACH state without having a dedicated channel allocated for the WTRU are disclosed. A WTRU performs a measurement of at least one parameter and generates a CQI based on the measurement. The WTRU then transmits the CQI via a random access channel (RACH). The CQI may be transmitted using an RACH preamble. A plurality of signature sequences may be divided into a plurality of groups. The WTRU may select one group based on the CQI and randomly select a signature sequence among signature sequences in the selected group for transmitting the RACH preamble. The CQI may be appended to the RACH preamble. The CQI may be transmitted via a control part or a data part of the RACH message.

  • Publication number: 20070298723
Abstract: A method and apparatus for signaling information indicating performance requirements that a WTRU commits to satisfying from the WTRU to permit a more efficient allocation of radio resources and increase network capacity. The WTRU may signal information to the base station that includes performance requirements that the WTRU commits to satisfying, that includes a code or a field associated with at least one performance requirement. In another embodiment, the signaled information indicates a change in performance requirements committed to by the WTRU. In yet another embodiment, the WTRU signals channel quality measurements, such as channel quality indicator (CQI) report messages, to the base station, which in turn infers certain information regarding receiver performance based on the channel quality measurements.
