The intersection extractor identifies intersections that occur on the new route. The historical analyzer determines historical routes traveled by the user, compares the new route to the historical route to identify which portions and intersections in the new route are familiar to the user and removes directions for the portions of the new route that are familiar. The user interface module provides the new route to the user.
