Patent number: 11006172Abstract: A communications system includes content distribution hardware operable to detect presence of a window in a video stream in which to insert an advertisement. Multiple viewers receive and view the video stream. Advertisement management hardware in the communications system receives notification of the window as well as attributes of the viewers receiving the video stream. Based on the attributes associated with viewers, the advertisement manager hardware selects a particular advertisement suitable for the viewers amongst multiple advertisements to insert in the window. The content distribution hardware inserts the selected advertisement in the window for distribution to the multiple viewers. During distribution of the advertisement in the window, if desired, the content distribution hardware monitors further use of the multiple communication devices to detect if any of the communication devices discontinue receiving the video stream during the window of time.Type: GrantFiled: May 17, 2018Date of Patent: May 11, 2021Assignee: Charter Communications Operating, LLCInventors: Vipul B. Patel, Jon C. Honhart, Justin O. Tidwell

Patent number: 9930418Abstract: A resident application and a second application are provided in a set-top terminal to receive a TV broadcast service and network personal video recorder (NPVR) service, respectively. The resident application is suspended in favor of the second application when a user changes from a broadcast channel to an NPVR enabled channel, and vice versa. In an embodiment where a digital video recorder (DVR) set-top terminal is used, a DVR server therein provides trick mode functions (pause, rewind and fast-forward) before an NPVR session, e.g., a Look Back session, is established. In another embodiment, during an NPVR session the DVR server plays back recorded programming content downloaded from a communications network, and provides trick mode functions as well.Type: GrantFiled: July 14, 2016Date of Patent: March 27, 2018Assignee: Time Warner Cable Enterprises LLCInventors: Vipul B. Patent number: 9451337Abstract: Techniques disclosed herein include systems and methods for transmitting TV program related content to IP connected devices on a home network, or other local area network. Users can watch television while simultaneously receiving content related to TV programs currently being displayed on a television. TV centric and TV program related content can be transmitted to IP connected devices. Moreover, this TV program related content can be displayed at the same time as a television program is being displayed on a television. As such, the system can provide media synchronization within home network using the set-top box as a gateway for delivering the content. Users can watch TV at home, and at the same time receive TV program related content on a laptop, tablet computer, mobile phone, etc.Type: GrantFiled: July 31, 2014Date of Patent: September 20, 2016Assignee: Time Warner Cable Enterprises LLCInventors: David W. Patent number: 8434118Abstract: In one embodiment, a method of operating a communications system is disclosed comprising receiving a request for establishment of a session from a terminal, establishing the session with the terminal, and providing at least one navigation video segment to the terminal, via the session. The communications system may be a source of programming, such as a cable system, and the terminal may be a set-top terminal coupled to a display device. The navigation video segment may be used by the terminal to create selection menus to be displayed for user navigation. The video segments may be rich media video segments. A playlist may be generated comprising an indexed listing of a plurality of available video segments. The playlist may facilitate retrieval of video segments requested by a terminal. Communications systems, terminals and methods of operating a terminal are disclosed, as well.Type: GrantFiled: May 27, 2004Date of Patent: April 30, 2013Assignee: Time Warner Cable Enterprises LLCInventors: Thomas L.
