  • Patent number: 4498948
Abstract: A tire building drum is described as having a unique mechanism for controlling the radial movement of the bead lock segments which are designed to hold the tire bead rings firmly, in position, during the tune-up operation. The mechanism includes an annular support member which is disposed concentrically around the longitudinal center axis of the drum adjacent opposing ends of the drum, and which has a number of raceways that are radially oriented in relation to said center axis. The raceways are equally, angularly spaced about said axis and are designed to slidably receive a bead lock segment on which a cam roller is freely mounted for rotation. The mechanism also includes an annular scroll member which is disposed concentrically around said axis in side-by-side parallel relation with each of the support members.

  • Patent number: 4450025
Abstract: An apparatus and method are provided for applying an envelope-type wrapping to tire bead rings. The apparatus and method are particularly useful when the wrapping material is to be applied directly over a lubricant coating on the bead ring. The apparatus includes a radially expansible drum, and an inflatable bladder that covers the drum and is interposed, along with the wrapping material, between the bead ring and the drum. According to the method of the invention, the bladder is inflated and rolled over in a desired sequence of steps to apply an envelope wrapping to the bead ring.

  • Patent number: 4239565
Abstract: A method and apparatus for making a pneumatic tire and particularly a giant off-the-highway radial type pneumatic tire is provided preferably by first forming a tire carcass around a tire carcass building drum and transporting the tire carcass to a second stage tire building machine by a carcass transport support means. The second stage machine comprises a first rotatable detachable building drum on a first shaft preferably capable of vertical positioning for placing the tire carcass on the first drum. The first drum is adapted to expand the tire carcass to a substantially toric configuration. A second rotatable collapsible drum for building a breaker assembly is mounted on a second shaft coaxially of the first shaft. Breaker transfer means travels over and between the drums to transfer the breaker assembly from the second drum to the first drum. When the breaker assembly is positioned over the first drum, the carcass is expanded into a toric configuration and mates with the breaker assembly.

  • Patent number: 4199393
Abstract: A tire building apparatus is provided having an improved mechanism for turning up the plies of the tire carcass and wrapping them around each tire bead ring. The mechanism is designed so that it can also be used to apply the sidewall pads to the expanded carcass of a radial tire. The improved mechanism includes a bladder that has a molded conical portion in its outer fold adjacent the building drum. This conical portion extends very close to the bead ring positioned adjacent the carcass at the sides of the drum shoulders. The improved mechanism also includes a control ring insert placed inside said bladder and radially inwardly from the conical portion of the outer bladder fold. When the bladder is inflated to wrap the carcass plies around the bead ring, the control ring insert and the molded conical portion of the outer bladder fold combine to provide an improved, tighter wrapping of the carcass plies around the bead ring.

  • Patent number: 4049486
Abstract: Apparatus suitable for guiding an uncured, deformable semiplastic rubber strip having skived or feathered outer thin edges, such as a tire tread strip or sidewall strip, into precise alignment with a tire carcass mounted on a drum of a tire building machine. Includes a plurality of support rollers linearly mounted for supporting the lower surface of a rubber strip with each support roller being axially movable and resiliently urged in the axial direction by springs mounted in compression at the ends of each support roller; a plurality of upper guide rollers and mounted above the support rollers and linearly offset from the support rollers. Each of the upper guide rollers is preferably canted upwardly and inwardly toward the center of the rubber strip and is mounted for rolling engagement with the top and edge of a thin edge of the rubber strip. Also, a plurality of lower guide rollers are mounted in linearly offset relation with the upper guide rollers and linearly offset with the support rollers.

  • Patent number: 3993530
Abstract: A pneumatic tire building machine with a rotatable building drum and means for feeding to and positioning on a carcass band thereon, a circumferential belt or breaker strip. One or more belt strips are separately positioned adjacent the building drum and guide means separately guide the belt strips over the rotating drum in precision alignment relative to and preferably substantially symmetrically of the circumferential centerline of the drum. The belt strips are applied over the carcass band on the building drum at substantially the same velocity as the surface velocity of the rotating building drum and carcass band thereon.

  • Patent number: 3947312
Abstract: A pneumatic tire building machine with a rotatable building drum adapted for forming thereon a tire carcass of rubberized plies and for expanding the formed carcass to a toric shape. A transfer mechanism positions a separately formed tread and belt assembly substantially concentrically around and spaced from the tire carcass disposed on the building drum. Annular guide means with rolling surfaces are also positioned substantially concentrically around and spaced from the tire carcass disposed on the building drum. When the tire carcass is expanded to a toric shape, the carcass contacts the guide means in rolling engagement and is guided to mate in precision alignment with the tread and belt assembly.
