Publication number: 20180057730Abstract: Various illustrative embodiments of a cement composition for use in subterranean formations are disclosed. The cement composition can comprise water and cement. The cement powder can be mixed with water on-site to create a cement slurry or mixed with water off-site and transported to the well site. The cement composition can be pumped into the subterranean formation and allowed to penetrate the formation. For example, the cement slurry can be pumped into the wellbore, such as into the annulus, to displace fluids in the wellbore and replace them with cement.Type: ApplicationFiled: August 22, 2017Publication date: March 1, 2018Applicant: BAKER HUGHES, A GE COMPANY, LLCInventors: TERRY D. MONROE, SUMIT BHADURI, VIRGILIO C. GO BONCAN, CHRISTINA MAGELKY

Patent number: 9429558Abstract: A multi-function testing apparatus contains a test cell, a piston positioned within the test cell and an adjustable piston depth-setting rod. The testing apparatus may be used to assess carbon dioxide resistance and hydraulic bonding strength of a set cement as well as to evaluate the self-healing capabilities of a set cement. Testing on the set cement may be conducted at simulated downhole conditions.Type: GrantFiled: June 26, 2012Date of Patent: August 30, 2016Assignee: Baker Hughes IncorporatedInventors: Virgilio C. Go Boncan, Robert S. Martin

Patent number: 9228993Abstract: An apparatus for determining shear bond strength of a cement to be set within a wellbore penetrating a subterranean formation consists of a housing, a vertical rod which extends from the uppermost portion of the housing through the lowermost portion of the housing, a base plate for positioning onto the bottom of the housing and for supporting the lowermost portion of the vertical rod, and a test plate for positioning onto the top of the housing through which the uppermost portion of the vertical rod extends. The apparatus may further contain a push rod. Shear bond strength is determined by introducing into the housing a sample core of the formation prior to introduction of a slurry containing the cement. The force required to break the bond between the vertical rod and the set cement may be used to determine the shear strength between the casing within the wellbore and the set cement when the cement is hardened within the wellbore.Type: GrantFiled: December 21, 2012Date of Patent: January 5, 2016Assignee: Baker Hughes IncorporatedInventors: Joseph Michael Shine, Jr., Virgilio C. Go Boncan, Robert Martin, Keith Lant, Charles C. Buford, Jr.

Patent number: 7494544Abstract: Cement compositions containing an expandable material are disclosed. The compositions are suitable for use in oil and gas wells. An example of such an expandable material is a polymer encapsulated chemical that expands upon heating. Examples of cement compositions containing polymer encapsulated isobutane or isopentane are disclosed. The use of cement compositions containing an expandable material can reduce the formation of micro-annulus or other deleterious physical properties in the set cement.Type: GrantFiled: January 23, 2003Date of Patent: February 24, 2009Assignee: BJ Services CompanyInventor: Virgilio C. Patent number: 6918292Abstract: An apparatus for measuring volumetric changes in cement as the cement is exposed to pressures and temperatures to simulate down-hole conditions, in a high-pressure high-temperature chamber is described. The apparatus is described a mold having a first section adjacent a base and a second section movably attached to the first section and adjacent the base in which cement may be placed. The apparatus includes a sensor to measure the movement of the first and second sections relative to one another in response to volumetric changes in the cement. Also described is a method of measuring the volumetric changes in cement as the cement is exposed to simulated down-hole pressures and temperatures in a high-pressure, high-temperature chamber.Type: GrantFiled: June 15, 2004Date of Patent: July 19, 2005Assignee: BJ Services CompanyInventors: Virgilio C. Patent number: 6626243Abstract: Cement compositions for cementing wellbores in cold environments. The cement compositions may include a mixture of a reactive aluminum silicate, aluminum sulfate and hydraulic cement, and may include one or more other additives. The cement compositions may be formulated to have reduced heat of hydration as compared to conventional cements, making them suited for cementing in permafrost environments. The cement slurries may optionally be foamed using a foaming agent and energizing phase.Type: GrantFiled: August 23, 2000Date of Patent: September 30, 2003Assignee: BJ Services CompanyInventor: Virgilio C.
