  • Patent number: 6021224
Abstract: Data representing, for instance, an image is lossily encoded, and a residual of the data is losslessly encoded. The lossily encoded data and the losslessly encoded residual provide a losslessly compressed data representation of the original data. The losslessly compressed data is then organized and stored on a storage system according to one or more criteria selected for the particular losslessly encoded data to be organized. This enables the efficient retrieval and processing of the compressed data, including retrieval of portions of the compressed data.

  • Patent number: 6014671
Abstract: An apparatus and method for representing and retrieving multi-dimensional data such as large satellite images. Images are stored in forms that can be rapidly browsed and retrieved by remote client applications in a drill-down or roll-up fashion. The data can be represented and retrieved using a view element data structure that includes node elements and transition elements between nodes. The data is decomposed (in space or spatial-frequency to construct a tree-based or graph-based data structure) into view elements. A set of view elements is selected, compressed and stored without adversely impacting image view extraction or generation speed. View elements are placed into the node elements of the data structure and the transition elements indicate the processing to generate other view elements in the data structure. In a server-side view construction, the view elements are selectively retrieved from storage, decompressed, and processed to generate the views of the data.

  • Patent number: 6005682
Abstract: The system achieves high-resolution imaging with low-resolution two-dimensional imagers whose sensors are only a fraction of a selected pixel area. Sensors are stepped across an image with an optical or mechanical stepper to acquire an image at each sensor position. Thereby, resolution is defined by a step size which is comparable to the sensor size, rather than by pixel resolution. The system thus uses multiple image, obtained from individual sensors, which have a sensed area substantially less than the area of the pixels of the sensor array. Such rescanning is accomplished by movable mirrors or lenses that are disposed between an illuminated specimen and a sensor area.

  • Patent number: 5978788
Abstract: An apparatus and method for approximating the data stored in a databases by generating multiple projections and representations from the database such that the OLAP queries for the original database (such as aggregation and histogram operations) may be applied to the approximated version of the database, which can be much smaller than the original databases. Other aspects optimize a mapping, via a mapping (or dimension) table, of non-numeric or numeric attributes to other numeric attributes such that the error incurred on applying queries to the approximated version of the database is minimized. Still further aspects define boundaries of approximations so that the boundaries are preserved when approximated versions of the databases are generated.

  • Patent number: 5940825
Abstract: A computer system and method for performing similarity searches which is phase and scale insensitive and which allows similarity searches to be performed at a semantic level. Each sequence in a database is preferably segmented at multiple projections and/or resolution levels. The sequences may represent object having multi-dimensional features such as temporal and/or spatial-temporal data. Preferably, the segmenting logic starts with the finest resolution, and each sequence is parsed into a number of disjointed segments, wherein each segment has uniform features. The uniform features could be segments having a constant slope, or waveform segments representable by a single function. The segments may then be re-sampled into a fixed length vector with appropriate normalization. A label may also be assigned to each segment via conventional clustering/classification methods.

  • Patent number: 5799301
Abstract: An apparatus and method includes segmenting each sequence to be stored in a database into nonoverlapping or minimally overlapping subsequences with equal length. Each subsequence is then normalized using a normalization procedure (such as normalized with respect to the energy or maximum amplitude of each sequence) and transformed into a series of coefficients in a feature space. The search is based on hierarchical correlation in the feature space between the target sequence with the subsequences. The correlation between the target sequence and the stored sequences is performed first at the lowest level in the hierarchy. At any given level, a match is declared when the correlated result is larger than a specific threshold. Sequences that fail to satisfy the matching criterion are discarded. The process is continued at the following level until the highest level is reached. Because of the hierarchical search, linear scan of the entire sequence can be avoided.

  • Patent number: 5734893
Abstract: A method and apparatus for minimizing the time required to obtain results for a content based query in a data base. More specifically, with this invention, the data base is partitioned into a plurality of groups. Then, a schedule or sequence of groups is assigned to each of the operations of the query, where the schedule represents the order in which an operation of the query will be applied to the groups in the schedule. Each schedule is arranged so that each application of the operation operates on the group which will yield intermediate results that are closest to final results.

  • Patent number: 5631686
Abstract: A method of achieving optimum optical contrast for detecting registration marks in a multicolor electrophotographic printing machine. The reflectivity of the image carrying member which is usually an intermediate transfer belt is determined. The reflectivity of each of the toners is then determined. If one of the toners has a contrasting reflectivity, while the remaining toners do not contrast then a uniform field of the contrasting toner is imaged and developed and the registration marks for the other toner colors are then developed on top of the uniform field. A void in the field in the shape of the other toner marks is used as the registration mark for the contrasting toner. If all of the toners have a contrasting reflectivity with the belt, the registration marks are imaged and developed directly on the belt.

  • Patent number: 5619313
Abstract: A method and apparatus for simultaneously developing and transferring a liquid toner image. The method includes the steps of moving a photoreceptor including a charge bearing surface having a first electrical potential, applying a uniform layer of charge having a second electrical potential onto the charge bearing surface, and imagewise dissipating charge from selected portions on the charge bearing surface to form a latent image electrostatically, such that the charge-dissipated portions of the charge bearing surface have the first electrical potential of the charge bearing surface. The method also includes the steps of moving an intermediate transfer member biased to a third electrical potential that lies between said first and said second potentials, into a nip forming relationship with the moving imaging member to form a process nip.

  • Patent number: 5508789
Abstract: A method and apparatus for controlling speed match between a photoreceptor and an intermediate transfer member to prevent image degradation by creating a deliberate speed mismatch. It has been found that slight variations in speed match between a photoreceptor and transfer member will maintain acceptable image quality, however, should the relative velocity between the members change sign, unacceptable image error results. The method herein comprises slewing the velocity of a photoreceptive member over a range of speeds while monitoring the output control signal current of a drive motor. The resulting control signal current has a large oscillation at the velocity at which the speed of the photoreceptor matches that of the intermediate transfer member. A controller is then used to maintain the motor velocity at a speed slightly less than or slightly greater than the intermediate transfer member speed so as to prevent a change in sign of the relative velocity between the two moving surfaces.

  • Patent number: 5387962
Abstract: An apparatus for guiding a moving web, particularly in an electrophotographic printing machine of the type having an endless photoreceptor belt supported by a plurality of rolls and arranged to move in a predetermined path through a plurality of processing stations disposed therealong the web being of the type which is supported by a plurality of rolls. A roll for supporting the web and in frictional contact therewith is adapted for rotational movement about a first axis. A roll support in the form of a dead shaft allows the roll laterally move to pivot about a second axis in a direction substantially normal to the predetermined path direction. This is accomplished by supporting the dead shaft on a V-groove roller which rides in a track substantially along the arc of rotation normal to the predetermined path direction.

  • Patent number: 5355716
Abstract: This invention relates to a shock and impact testing apparatus for subjecting items under test, such as a motor vehicle crash sensor, to an acceleration pulse of a prescribed amplitude and shape, such as a half sine or haversine. The apparatus includes a stationary support providing a pivot point, a swivel arm mounted for rotational movement about the pivot point and an electric motor, arranged on the stationary support and mechanically coupled to the swivel arm, for rotating the swivel arm at a desired, prescribed speed. The arm has a free end for the attachment of the test object so that the test object is moved at the prescribed speed along a given path. A mechanical spring is arranged in this path for reversing the direction of motion of the test object, thereby imparting an acceleration pulse to the test object of a prescribed shape.

  • Patent number: 5313252
Abstract: An apparatus and method for detecting and reducing image transfer smear is provided. A pattern consisting of a sequence of toner characters or marks separated by spaces is written and developed on a photoreceptive member and then transferred to an intermediate medium. As the pattern is transferred to the intermediate medium, the velocity of the photoreceptor is varied. A photodetector is used to detect the transferred pattern on the intermediate medium and generate a signal indicative thereof. As the detector senses the absence of toner, the signal generated is greater when the space between the toner characters is largest. By monitoring when the signal is greatest and determining the corresponding velocity of the photoreceptor at that time, the best velocity match between the photoreceptor and intermediate transfer medium can be determined and set.

  • Patent number: 5272492
Abstract: A single pass color printer provides registration by controlling the velocity of the photoreceptor as a plurality of color separation latent images are superimposed on an area of the photoreceptor. The velocity of the photoreceptor is controlled by averaged error values v.sub.ij. The averaged error values v.sub.ij are determined periodically for the same photoreceptor or when an old photoreceptor is replaced with a new photoreceptor or when a user depresses a button in a display to recalibrate the averaged error values v.sub.ij after noticing degradation of point quality. The averaged error values are based upon at least one of time deviations, average transit times and average velocities of areas of the photoreceptor on which the latent images are formed. The calibration of the velocity variations is equivalent to a calibration of the belt thickness uniformity. Further, the method of determining or calibrating the averaged error values v.sub.ij can be used to verify that the method was properly done.

  • Patent number: 5243396
Abstract: The present invention relates to design rules and geometric compensations for image forming devices. The inherent eccentricities of the photosensitive belts or drums and the timing belt speed reduction drive trains of image forming device cause misregistration of the developed latent images. To prevent such misregistration, the timing belt of the speed reduction drive train has a peripheral length which is selected from a range of values dependent on a preselected speed reduction ratio between the driven pulley and the driving pulley. Further, each one of the range of values is an integral improper fraction or integral multiple of the circumference of the driven pulley. Moreover, the driving pulley of the last pulley belt set coupled to the photosensitive member and a driven pulley prior to the last pulley belt set rotate n full rotations as the photosensitive member rotates from the image forming location to the image transfer location.
