Abstract: Some embodiments of the present invention provide an apparatus and method adapted to control or assist the movement of a display screen relative to a screen housing. In some embodiments, a linkage assembly is adapted to move a display screen relative to a screen housing. Also, some embodiments employ a hub movable within an elongated aperture, and can also have a projection engaged with a second elongated aperture to help control the orientation of the display screen relative to the screen housing. Some embodiments according to the present invention employ lift devices, lock devices, and other display control devices, such as clutches and friction assemblies.

Abstract: In the display screen apparatus and method of the present invention, a hub or other extension coupled to a display screen is received within an aperture in a body portion (preferably of a screen housing) for sliding, rotation, or both sliding and rotation. A gasket is employed to permit a user to place and hold the display screen in a range of sliding and/or rotational positions with respect to the body portion. In a preferred embodiment of the present invention, the display screen has a screen backing from which the extension extends. Also preferably, the extension is in the form of a hub connected to the screen backing and having an aperture through which screen wiring passes from the display screen into a screen housing. In one preferred embodiment, the gasket is held between a surface of the screen housing and a compression member.

Abstract: A portable computer includes a base and a cover incorporating a display screen pivotably mounted to the base between a closed position overlying the base and an open position raised over the base. A swivel arrangement is located in the cover enabling at a least a portion of the cover and the display screen to be rotatable about an axis which is perpendicular to the cover in the open position, and between a landscape orientation in which the display screen has a longer dimension extending in a substantially horizontal direction and a portrait orientation in which the display screen has a shorter dimension extending in a substantially horizontal direction. The cover is also mounted for sliding movement. Front speaker ports are opened and closed when the cover moves. A recessed corner segment is provided on the cover for easier manipulation of the cover.
