Publication number: 20030029776Abstract: Economical processes are disclosed for the production of fuels of reduced sulfur content from a feedstock, typically derived from natural petroleum, wherein the feedstock is comprised of limited amounts of sulfur-containing organic compounds as unwanted impurities. The processes involve integrated, multistage processes which include pretreatment of a light naphtha with a solid adsorbent to remove basic nitrogen containing compounds, chemical conversion of one or more of the sulfur-containing impurities to higher boiling products by alkylation, and removing the higher boiling products by fractional distillation. Advantageously, the processes include selective hydrogenation of the high-boiling fraction whereby the incorporation of hydrogen into hydrocarbon compounds, sulfur-containing organic compounds, and/or nitrogen-containing organic compounds assists by hydrogenation removal of sulfur and/or nitrogen.Type: ApplicationFiled: July 31, 2001Publication date: February 13, 2003Inventors: Vivek R. Patent number: 6513029Abstract: An index and materialized view selection wizard produces a fast and reasonable recommendation for a configuration of indexes, materialized views, and indexes on materialized views which are beneficial given a specified workload for a given database and database server. Candidate materialized views and indexes are obtained, and a joint enumeration of the combined materialized views and indexes is performed to obtain a recommended configuration. The configuration includes indexes, materialized views and indexes on materialized views. Candidate materialized views are obtained by first determining subsets of tables are referenced in queries in the workload and then finding interesting table subsets. Next, interesting subsets are considered on a per query basis to determine which are syntactically relevant for a query. Materialized views which are likely to be used for the workload are then generated along with a set of merged materialized views.Type: GrantFiled: August 1, 2000Date of Patent: January 28, 2003Assignee: Microsoft CorporationInventors: Sanjay Agrawal, Surajit Chaudhuri, Vivek R. Publication number: 20020139781Abstract: There has been invented a method and apparatus for heat treating or brazing joints in metals and ceramics using an optical concentrator (reflecting waveguide) to reflect energy from infrared energy heat sources, in a pattern which will provide precisely tailored illumination, heating, melting of filler and fusion of the area to be heat treated or the joint to be formed. CAD optical ray tracing software is used to custom design the reflecting waveguides for directing the energy as needed. With the invention, shorter, reduced energy heat cycles can be used to produce reliable accurate brazes, including brazes to join small diameter tubes. No furnace is necessary because localized small area brazing can be done in situ with the invention method and apparatus. Various heat sources can be used to braze various geometries, including very small diameter tubes.Type: ApplicationFiled: February 1, 2001Publication date: October 3, 2002Inventors: John O. Publication number: 20020121458Abstract: A product of reduced sulfur content is produced from an olefin-containing hydrocarbon feedstock which includes sulfur-containing impurities. The feedstock is contacted with an olefin-modification catalyst in a reaction zone under conditions which are effective to produce an intermediate product which has a reduced amount of olefinic unsaturation relative to that of the feedstock as measured by bromine number. The intermediate product is then contacted with a hydrodesulfurization catalyst in the presence of hydrogen under conditions which are effective to convert at least a portion of its sulfur-containing impurities to hydrogen sulfide.Type: ApplicationFiled: January 21, 2000Publication date: September 5, 2002Inventors: Vivek R. Pradhan, Ptoshia A. Burnett, George A. Huff

Publication number: 20020123979Abstract: Aggregation queries are performed by first identifying outlier values, aggregating the outlier values, and sampling the remaining data after pruning the outlier values. The sampled data is extrapolated and added to the aggregated outlier values to provide an estimate for each aggregation query. Outlier values are identified by selecting values outside of a selected sliding window of data having the lowest variance. An index is created for the outlier values. The outlier data is removed from the window of data, and separately aggregated. The remaining data without the outliers is then sampled in one of many known ways to provide a statistically relevant sample that is then aggregated and extrapolated to provide an estimate for the remaining data. This sampled estimate is combined with the outlier aggregate to form an estimate for the entire set of data.Type: ApplicationFiled: January 12, 2001Publication date: September 5, 2002Applicant: Microsoft CorporationInventors: Surajit Chaudhuri, Vivek R. Narasayya, Rajeev Motwani, Mayur D. Datar

Publication number: 20020121459Abstract: A product of reduced sulfur content is produced from an olefin-containing hydrocarbon feedstock which includes sulfur-containing impurities. The feedstock is contacted with an olefin-modification catalyst in a reaction zone under conditions which are effective to produce an intermediate product which has a reduced amount of olefinic unsaturation relative to that of the feedstock as measured by bromine number. The intermediate product is then separated into fractions of different volatility, and the lowest boiling fraction is contacted with a hydrodesulfurization catalyst in the presence of hydrogen under conditions which are effective to convert at least a portion of its sulfur-containing impurities to hydrogen sulfide.Type: ApplicationFiled: January 21, 2000Publication date: September 5, 2002Inventors: Vivek R. Patent number: 6266658Abstract: An index tuning wizard produces a fast and reasonable recommendation identifying database indexes to use given a specified workload. A query optimizer is used to determine the expected usefulness of potential indexes for the specified workload by taking cost of queries in the workload into account. A cost based pruning of indexes is then performed to provide an intermediate set of proposed indexes. Indexes having most benefit based on storage constraints are then selected. The optimizer is then used again, and further pruning is done on a benefits basis. An index is not recommended unless it has a significant impact on the workload.Type: GrantFiled: April 20, 2000Date of Patent: July 24, 2001Assignee: Microsoft CorporationInventors: Atul Adya, Sanjay Agrawal, Surajit Chaudhuri, Vivek R. Patent number: 6024865Abstract: A product of reduced sulfur content is produced from a feedstock which is comprised of a mixture of hydrocarbons and includes sulfur-containing aromatic compounds as unwanted impurities. The process involves separating the feedstock by fractional distillation into a lower boiling fraction which contains the more volatile sulfur-containing aromatic impurities and at least one higher boiling fraction which contains the less volatile sulfur-containing aromatic impurities. Each fraction is then separately subjected to reaction conditions which are effective to convert at least a portion of its content of sulfur-containing aromatic impurities to higher boiling sulfur-containing products by alkylation with an alkylating agent in the presence of an acidic catalyst. The higher boiling sulfur-containing products are removed by fractional distillation.Type: GrantFiled: September 9, 1998Date of Patent: February 15, 2000Assignee: BP Amoco CorporationInventors: Bruce D.
