  • Patent number: 8231140
Abstract: An airbag module includes a bag wrap, a retainer, an airbag, and an inflator to inflate the airbag. The airbag includes at least one vent hole, and a deployment control flap to change trajectory of the airbag such that the airbag will deploy upwards and laterally to left and right sides. The deployment control flap is fixed at both ends to the retainer, airbag, or bag wrap.

  • Patent number: 8181990
Abstract: An airbag for use within a motor vehicle, which includes a gas generator for supplying inflation gas; a lower chamber configured to be inflated directly by the gas generator; an upper chamber located above and proximate to the lower chamber; and a diffusing panel configured to separate the lower and upper chambers and allows inflation gas to pass through. The upper chamber is to be indirectly inflated by the gas generator through the diffusing panel, and upon completed deployment will have an internal pressure lower than the deployed internal pressure of the lower chamber.

  • Publication number: 20060249939
Abstract: First and second panels of air bag material are secured to one another with at least one seam defining a portion of a perimeter of a cavity bounded by the first and second panels, which is open along at least one unseamed portion extending along the first and second panels between endpoints of at least one seam. An opening in the second panel receives an end portion of an air bag inflator. Inflation gas generated by the air bag inflator is discharged into the air bag through the at least one unseamed portion, at least one of which is oriented downwards when installed in a vehicle. An air bag module cover incorporates first and second laterally opening door portions and a lower downward opening door portion that provide for a downward and outward initial deployment of the air bag.

  • Publication number: 20060197327
Abstract: A three-panel, passenger-side airbag includes main, right, and left panels, and a diffuser provided adjacent a rear side of the main panel. The main panel includes a front impact said and a rear inflation side. The front impact side is formed of upper and lower portions. When the airbag is inflated, the upper portion is configured to be directed toward the upper torso of a passenger and the lower portion in configured to be directed toward the passenger's lower torso, groin, and legs. The diffuser is configured to direct inflation gas toward the lower portion so that the lower portion inflates faster than the upper portion.

  • Publication number: 20060181067
Abstract: An airbag apparatus with adaptive inflation characteristics vents inflation gas prior to full airbag deployment to afford proper protection for an out-of-position occupant. A vent opening in the casing is controlled by a movable control section of the airbag itself. The control section has a control opening that is registered with the vent opening when the airbag is uninflated, or when it is partially inflated, such as when the airbag encounters an out-of-position occupant. For a properly positioned occupant, the control section moves to cover the vent opening as the airbag becomes fully inflated to block the escape of gas from the casing.
