Patent number: 7765069Abstract: Methods and systems are provided for detecting the accidental use of short and long samples in the clinical analysis of a sample, specimen, or assay. The systems can include a clinical analyzer for determining one or more values for one or more measurable characteristics of a sample. These values are used in combination with reference data stored in a data module to generate a probability that the sample tested is a short sample, a long sample, or an acceptable sample. This probability and/or the status of the sample as a short sample, a long sample, or an acceptable sample are output to a user.Type: GrantFiled: August 4, 2005Date of Patent: July 27, 2010Assignee: Abaxis, Inc.Inventors: Vladimir E. Ostoich, Kenneth Aron, Dennis M. Bleile

Patent number: 5478750Abstract: The present invention provides a compact, highly automated photometric analyzer for measuring the concentration of substances found in a fluid, typically a blood sample or other body fluid sample taken from a patient. The operator places a small quantity of the sample into a special rotor and then loads the rotor into the analyzer. The analyzer accepts the rotor, centrifuges and dilutes the sample, and distributes the sample into a plurality of cuvettes near the outer edge of the rotor. Some of these cuvettes hold reagents which react with the sample. The analyzer then measures light absorption within the sample at a number of preselected frequencies. According to the present invention, a pair of specially designed apertures direct light from the sample through a plurality of beam splitters, interference filters, and associated photodetectors. The system also includes means for performing automatic calibration and error checking functions.Type: GrantFiled: August 18, 1994Date of Patent: December 26, 1995Assignee: Abaxis, Inc.Inventors: Daniel M. Bernstein, Paul J. Lingane, Robert Nagle, Vladimir E. Ostoich

Patent number: 5300779Abstract: Novel methods and devices are provided involving at least one chamber, at least one capillary, and at least one reagent involved in a system providing for a detectable signal. As appropriate, the devices provide for measuring a sample, mixing the sample with reagents, defining a flow path, and reading the result. Of particular interest is the use of combinations of specific binding pair members which result in agglutination information, where the resulting agglutination particles may provide for changes in flow rate, light patterns of a flowing medium, or light absorption or scattering. A fabrication technique particularly suited for forming internal chambers in plastic devices is also described along with various control devices for use with the basic device.Type: GrantFiled: August 18, 1992Date of Patent: April 5, 1994Assignee: Biotrack, Inc.Inventors: Robert S. Hillman, Michael E. Cobb, Jimmy D. Allen, Ian Gibbons, Vladimir E. Ostoich, Laura J. Winfrey

Patent number: 4797283Abstract: An automatic drug tape dispensing and metering device and a roll of drug tape housed in a small portable dispenser unit. The dispenser contains a measurement device for carefully measuring the length of tape as it is dispensed from the dispenser. A counter monitors the remaining doses of drug tape remaining within the dispenser. A timer device may be provided to alert the patient that it is time for the medicament to be dispensed. As the lid of the dispenser unit is opened, the measured length of drug tape is severed from the roll by a cutter blade incorporated into the lid. The device permits a physician to accurately customize the dosage and administration of the medicament to be given a patient by adjusting the tape length released for each single dose and selecting the time intervals between dosages.Type: GrantFiled: September 23, 1987Date of Patent: January 10, 1989Assignee: Biotrack, IncorporatedInventors: Jimmy D. Patent number: 4733404Abstract: A transmission control circuit for use in a data terminal equipment receiver section is disclosed. The output of a phase locked loop or narrow band tuned filter input register clocking circuit which includes a quasi-differentiator and full wave rectifier is sent to a divider circuit and the divided clocking signal is then quasi-differentiated, full-wave rectified and used to drive a signal source circuit. The signal source circuit output has a polarity which is determined by the signal output of the full wave rectifier and is integrated and fed back to control inputs of the quasi-differentiators. An offset signal is also provided to the integrator. The result is an automatic adjustment of the pulse width to a fixed fraction of the input bit period.Type: GrantFiled: November 25, 1986Date of Patent: March 22, 1988Assignee: Hewlett-Packard CompanyInventor: Vladimir E. Patent number: 4720687Abstract: A digital signal regenerator comprises a quantizer, a sampler, a timing extractor and a frequency and phase locked loop. The included frequency locked loop employs a frequency difference detector and a frequency generator which it shares with the included phase locked loop. The frequency difference detector includes flip-flops for generating square wave frequency difference signals, obviating the need for the multipliers, comprators and low pass filters used in prior devices. In addition, the frequency difference detector includes pulse-width modulator which is controlled by a pulse-width regulator. The regulator provides for a constant loop gain for the frequency locked loop over different reference frequencies output by the frequency generator.Type: GrantFiled: February 20, 1987Date of Patent: January 19, 1988Assignee: Hewlett-Packard CompanyInventors: Vladimir E.
