    Abstract: Methods and apparatus for generating and using multicast transaction messages in an exchange system are described. A unicast transaction message is received, e.g., by a gateway device which interacts with devices outside the exchange system. The gateway device generates a multicast transaction message from the unicast transaction message and sends transmits it to other devices in the exchange system. A multicast transaction message is received by the gateway device. The gateway generates a unicast transaction response message and sends it to the trader system which sent the transaction message to which the response corresponds. Traders are permitted to include information in a transaction message field which is not interpreted or used by the exchange to control message processing. The information in the uninterpreted field is echoed back to the trader system and allows the trader to correlate the transaction messages to one or more clients or to perform other operations.

    Abstract: In a first mode of dedicated control channel (DCCH) operation, a wireless terminal is allocated more segments than in a second mode. The wireless terminal uses different information bit to modulation symbol mapping in the different modes. On a per DCCH segment basis, the same number of modulation symbols are communicated in either mode but more information bits are conveyed in the second mode. Information bits for a DCCH segment are partitioned into two subsets. The two subsets are used to generate another set, each of the two subsets and the another set are input to the same mapping function to generate three equal size sets of modulation symbols which are transmitted via the DCCH segment. Uplink tone hopping is used such that one of the equal size sets of modulation symbols for the DCCH segment uses the same tone but a different set uses a different tone.

    Abstract: Methods and apparatus for implementing an electronic trading system which supports risk checking as part of standard message order processing is described. In accordance with the invention risk checking is moved into the exchange system, e.g., electronic communications network, responsible for servicing transaction/order messages and implementing trades. Thus, at least some level of risk checking is performed on transactions even if a broker allows a trader to submit orders directly to the ECN without first passing through a broker order/risk checking system. Brokers, clients and/or individual traders provide parameters used to perform various checks which are performed within the exchange on submitted orders. Various checks are broker level checks which test that orders placed by individual clients do not exceed constraints which are based on the aggregate of the holdings of the individual clients of a broker. Additional client level and trader specified risk checking may also be performed.

Loss of message synchronization may relate to messages or other communication over a shared high speed low latency path within the exchange that is used for communicating transaction messages, e.g., order messages to be processed. To avoid introducing delays into communication with other traders who's transaction messages share the same high speed communications path within the exchange as the trader system with which message synchronization is lost, message gap fill to restore message synchronization with a trader system that lost synchronization is performed via a different communications path than the shared communications path used for communicating new transaction messages.

Physical layer identification information is used when identifying a remote, e.g., adjacent, access node as a message destination. Thus, when a connection identifier based on one or more physical layer identifiers is available to a wireless terminal, e.g., from one or more downlink signals received from a destination access node, the wireless terminal can use the connection identifier corresponding to the destination node to route a message via an access node with which it has an established uplink connection. Such connection identifier information can be used even when other addressing information, e.g., network layer address information, associated with the destination access node, may not be available to the wireless terminal.

Full tone and split-tone modes of dedicated control channel operation are supported. In full tone mode, a single wireless terminal is allocated each of the dedicated control channel segments associated with a single logical tone. In split tone mode, dedicated control channel segments associated with a single logical tone are allocated between different wireless terminals, with each of the multiple wireless terminals receiving a different non-overlapping subset of the dedicated control channel segments. Logical dedicated control channel tones can be dynamically reallocated for full-tone mode use or split tone mode use.

    Abstract: A base station uses a common link layer controller for multiple physical attachment points to facilitate concurrent wireless connections between different sector physical attachment points and a wireless terminal using the same link layer link. A wireless terminal maintains multiple simultaneous wireless connections for the same link layer link. A packet of user data is fragmented into a plurality of grouping of MAC frames, thus a packet portion can be communicated over a connection. A single packet is sometimes communicated with different portions conveyed over different wireless connections. Automatic repeat request, using the common link layer controller, allows for retransmission of a packet portion over a different connection than it was initially transmitted over. A wireless terminal sends connection request messages including lists of link layer identifiers associated with the wireless terminal. A base station responds with an indication of whether logical link state was already present.
