  • Publication number: 20080144220
Abstract: A method and apparatus having magnetic properties. The apparatus includes a main pole and a return pole spaced apart from the main pole. The return includes at least one multilayer block having a plurality of alternating layers of magnetic material and non-magnetic material. The return pole also includes a single magnetic material layer coupled to the at least one multilayer block. The magnetic material layer has a permeability that is greater than a permeability of the at least one multilayer block.

  • Publication number: 20080003454
Abstract: An alloy with the formula FeACoBMC, where M includes at least one element of Rh, Ru, Pt, Pd, Os, and Ir, and where 48?A<60, 30?B?50, and 5<C?20 or where 50?A?70, 35<B?50, and 5<C?20. In the formula, A+B+C=about 100 mass percent. The alloys resist corrosion and have a high saturation magnetization. The materials, which may be provided as thin films, are suitable for use as write pole materials in recording heads for magnetic media in data storage devices.

  • Publication number: 20040004786
Abstract: The present invention is a perpendicular writer having an air-bearing surface, a main pole with an extension, and return pole, and a back gap closure intermediate the main pole extension and the return pole. The main pole includes a top magnetic layer and a soft magnetic underlayer separated by a nonmagnetic spacer. The main pole extension is in direct contact with the main pole and recessed from the air-bearing surface. The top magnetic layer forms a trailing edge of the main pole at the ABS and has a magnetic moment greater than that of the soft magnetic underlayer. Further, the top magnetic layer and the soft magnetic underlayer are anti ferromagnetically coupled through the thin nonmagnetic spacer. The nonmagnetic spacer has predominantly 111-crystalline texture and promotes reduction of coercivity and grain size along with an increase of anistropy of the top magnetic layer material.
