  • Patent number: 6491667
Abstract: The present invention is a syringe tip cap comprising a bottom portion, a top portion, an annular skirt extending therebetween and a plug that projects proximally from the bottom portion so as to be telescoped into the passage of a syringe tip. The plug provides means to allow air to be vented from the syringe with contacting the user. The syringe tip cap of the present invention also provides the user with an indication by tactile and visual feedback that the syringe has been vented.

  • Publication number: 20020099339
Abstract: The present invention is a passively shieldable blood collection set. The blood collection set includes a needle cannula, a hub mounted to the needle cannula and a tip guard slidably movable along the needle cannula. The tip guard can be slid into a distal position where the tip of the needle cannula is safely shielded. A collapsible guard drive is mounted to the hub and includes a pair of collapsible leaves extending from the hub to the tip guard. The leaves have a length that enable the tip guard to move into shielding engagement around the tip of the needle cannula, while preventing complete removal of the tip guard from the needle cannula. The leaves are resiliently deformable and can be collapsed onto themselves and onto the hub. The leaves can be retained in their collapsed condition by a packaging cover and subsequently by the grip of a medical practitioner.

  • Patent number: 6409701
Abstract: A retractable needle syringe includes a barrel defining a receiver. There is a plunger having an inner rod extending distally from the proximal end. The plunger includes a hollow sleeve that is disposed over and extend beyond an inner rod. The plunger includes a hollow cutter extending from the inner rod and a stopper disposed over the end of the sleeve. The plunger has a displaceable collar to prevent movement of the inner rod with respect to the sleeve, that is by distal force to the plunger by engagement with the proximal end of the barrel allowing the cutting surface to cut through the stopper. There is a hub with a stem, a proximal flange and an engagement. A clip having a proximal foot with an opening therethrough and a distal grip is disposed on the stem of the hub. The proximal foot of the clip is disposed at the distal surface of the flange and the grip at the engagement on the stem.

  • Publication number: 20020069974
Abstract: A dispenser is provided for adhesive tape. The dispenser includes a tape roll chamber with a hub having an axis about which a roll of tape may rotate. A tape dispensing channel extends from the tape roll chamber. The tape dispensing channel is configured to twist the tape approximately 90° about its longitudinal axis. Additionally, the tape dispensing channel is oriented such that the axis of the tape at the end of the tape dispensing channel is aligned at an acute angle to a plane defined by the axis of the tape wound onto the roll of tape. A window is defined near the end of the tape dispensing channel to enable an index finger to apply pressure to the non-adhesive surface of the tape for urging the adhesive surface of the tape against a substrate. A blade support wall is disposed distally of the window and includes a serrated blade for severing the tape.

  • Patent number: 6382442
Abstract: The plastic closure of this invention is particularly, but not exclusively adapted for sealing medicament vials and other medical containers or as a collar for retaining a fluid transferset on a medical container. The plastic closure of this invention includes a generally tubular portion which surrounds the rim of the container and a free end portion which is permanently radially deformed or crimped into the neck of the container. The plastic closure of this invention is formed of a polymer, preferably a polymeric alloy or melt blend, which is sufficiently malleable to permit radial deformation, yet sufficiently rigid to retain its shape following deformation and sufficiently resistant to creep to maintain the seal between the plastic closure and the container following deformation. A preferred polymer for the plastic closure of this invention is an alloy or melt blend comprising a relatively rigid polymer such as polycarbonate and a soft malleable co-polymer such as a polyester.

  • Patent number: 6358476
Abstract: A blood collection assembly designed for one-time use includes a microcollection tube and an adapter for the tube which is sized to fit into the tube slot of an automated analytical instrument. The adapter includes structure which forms a tight and permanent interference fit with the microtube so that the tube, once inserted into the adapter, cannot be removed by hand, and the assembly, after sampling and analysis, must be discarded in one piece.

  • Patent number: 6350415
Abstract: A closure for sealing the open end of a specimen collection container from the environment is provided. The closure includes a socket mountable on the open end of the collection container for enclosing an interior region of the collection container. The socket includes a ball receiving internal surface having a protrusion thereon. The closure further includes a generally spherical-shaped ball mounted within the socket and at least partially enclosed by the socket. The ball is capable of rotative movement within the socket between an open position and a closed position. The ball includes an external surface capable of interference engagement with the protrusion of the socket upon rotative movement of the ball between the open position and the closed position.

  • Publication number: 20020010995
Abstract: A method of sealing a medical container such as a vial with a polymeric closure, wherein the polymeric enclosure includes a tubular collar portion and an integral radial portion, which includes disposing the tubular collar portion over the radial rim portion of the container to surround the reduced diameter neck portion and radially deforming the tubular collar portion adjacent its free end into the reduced diameter neck portion and against the adjacent radial rim portion and, wherein the polymer selected for the closure is sufficiently malleable to permit radial deformation, yet sufficiently rigid to retain its shape following deformation and sufficiently resistant to creep to maintain a seal between the plastic closure and the container following radial deformation.
