Patent number: 8390546Abstract: A display device comprising a light guide (12), a front plate (14), and an intermediate electromechanically operable foil (16). Two electrode layers (22, 23) are arranged on either side of the foil (16) to induce electrostatic forces on the foil (16) and to bring selected portions of the foil into contact with the light guide (12), thereby extracting light from the light guide (12). The second electrode layer (22) is arranged on the opposite side of the light guide (12) with reference to the foil (16), and separated from the light guide (12) by means of a refractive layer (28). As no electrode layer is required on the light guide itself, the light path of rays extracted from the light guide is cleaner, and the absorption of light is reduced. The light guide can have a thickness such that the light extracted from the light guide per unit length is sufficient to allow for line-at-a-time addressing.Type: GrantFiled: January 4, 2011Date of Patent: March 5, 2013Assignee: Rambus Inc.Inventors: Ramon Pascal Van Gorkom, Peter Alexander Duine, Volker Schoellmann, Ruediger Johannes Lange, Siebe Tjerk De Zwark

Publication number: 20070084989Abstract: The present invention relates to a display device with a detection system for detecting an input po- sition on a screen (301) of the display. A light guide (302) is arranged adjacent to the screen (301). The light guide (302) has a light source (308) arranged to emit light (310) into the light guide (302). The optical matching between the light guide (302) and its surroundings is adapted such that the light (310) of the light source (308) is normally confined within the light guide (302) by means of total internal reflection. However, a user establishing physi- cal contact with the light guide (302) perturbs the state of total internal reflection, and light (310) will be extracted from the light guide (302). In the display device, light detecting means (303) are arranged to detect said light (310) and relate this detection to an input position where the user contact occurred. The display is preferably an LCD, O-LED or P-LED type display.Type: ApplicationFiled: September 14, 2004Publication date: April 19, 2007Applicant: Koninklijke Philips Electronics N.V.Inventors: Ruediger Lange, Volker Schoellmann

Publication number: 20070040778Abstract: A display device for displaying a three dimensional image such that different views are displayed according to the viewing angle has a display panel with a plurality of separately addressable pixels for displaying said image. The pixels are grouped such that different pixels in a group correspond to different views of the image. A display driver controls a transmission characteristic of each pixel to generate an image according to received image data. The drive signals applied to each pixel in the display panel are adjusted using intensity correction values that vary the optical transmission of each pixel within a group so as to produce an intensity for each point in the image that is independent of viewing direction.Type: ApplicationFiled: September 30, 2004Publication date: February 22, 2007Applicant: Koninklijke Philips Electronics N.V.Inventors: Gerardus Karman, Volker Schoellmann

Publication number: 20060291774Abstract: A display device comprising a light guide (12), a back plate (14), a flexible element (15) arranged in between said light guide (12) and said back plate (14), and addressable electrodes (23) for inducing electrostatic forces on said element (15) a for bringing selected portions of said element (15) into contact with said light guide (12), in order to extract light from said light guide (12). The addressable electrodes (23) are arranged only on one of said light guide (12) and said back plate (14), and a biasing force acts on said flexible element (15) in a direction away from said addressable electrodes (23). The voltages required to operate the display will also be lower compared to the conventional foil display. In principle it is feasible to keep the electrode of the flexible element at ground potential while applying 10-20V pulses to the addressable electrodes to overcome the biasing force.Type: ApplicationFiled: March 26, 2004Publication date: December 28, 2006Inventors: Volker Schoellmann, Tijsbert Mathieu Creemers, Peter Duine, Johannes Marra, Andrea Giraldo

The pixels are grouped such that different pixels in a group correspond to different views of the image.
