Publication number: 20070157745Abstract: An instrument cluster assembly includes a pointer assembly that generates a pointer image that moves along the scale to point to a portion of the scale that corresponds with the measured parameter. The pointer assembly projects the pointer image such that a solid pointer is not required and therefore does not obstruct any portion of the dial face. The pointer image tracks along the oval shape of the scale without the limitations imposed on a physical pointer rotated about a fixed central axis.Type: ApplicationFiled: January 9, 2007Publication date: July 12, 2007Applicant: Siemens VDO Automotive CorporationInventors: Kenichi Takato, Vyacheslav Birman, Werner Eckardt

Publication number: 20060202993Abstract: An instrument display includes a light source that selectively emits light and a light guide that receives the light. One or more optical coating layers are disposed on the light guide. The light guide has a first index of refraction, and the optical coating layer or layers have a second index of refraction that is greater than the first index of refraction of the light guide. Publication number: 20060062004Abstract: A vehicle instrument cluster lens assembly for achieving a desired smoked lens effect in a vehicle instrument panel includes a first layer having an associated polarizing orientation for transforming incident light into polarized light having a first orientation that corresponds to the polarizing orientation. A second layer receives the polarized light and shifts the first orientation of the polarized light to a second orientation that is different than the first orientation. A surface receives the polarized light from the second layer and at least partially reflects the polarized light in a direction toward the second layer. The second layer shifts the second orientation of the polarized light to a third orientation that is different from the polarizing orientation of the first layer to prevent the polarized light from being transmitted to a vehicle occupant.Type: ApplicationFiled: July 6, 2005Publication date: March 23, 2006Applicant: Siemens VDO Automotive CorporationInventor: Vyacheslav Birman

Publication number: 20050225961Abstract: An instrument display for a vehicle dash includes a unique light source and light guide assembly. The light source is incorporated directly into the light guide. A non-contact magnetic coupling transfers power from a circuit board to the light source. A textured surface is formed on one portion of the external surface of the light guide to evenly illuminate the light guide. Also, surface roughness on an opposing external surface portion of the light guide is varied depending on the length of the light guide to provide similar luminance for light guides having different lengths.Type: ApplicationFiled: June 3, 2005Publication date: October 13, 2005Applicant: Siemens VDO Automotive CorporationInventors: Vyacheslav Birman, Werner Eckardt, Qi Tao, Marcus Moell

Publication number: 20050162090Abstract: A vehicle display includes two colored light sources that are operatively connected to a circuit board. Each of the two colored light sources emits a colored light that mixes to form a desired color of display light that illuminates a vehicle graphic. The desired color of display light is within a predetermined color tolerance. The vehicle display achieves a small size without incurring added expenses associated with using more than two light sources.Type: ApplicationFiled: January 6, 2005Publication date: July 28, 2005Applicant: Siemens VDO Automotive CorporationInventors: Vyacheslav Birman, Christian Tanguy, Werner Eckardt, Shirley Yu

Publication number: 20050162843Abstract: A pointer includes a diffuser that receives light from a single light source and reflects light toward a tip and a tail of the pointer uniformly regardless of radial position. Transmission of light toward a tip and a tail of the pointer is accomplished by a reflective surfaces within the pointer. A diffuser is disposed adjacent the reflective surfaces to provide an even luminance throughout the pointer. The light source produces light that is transferred through a translucent shaft toward the diffuser. The diffuser is aligned with light transmitted through the shaft. The light source is disposed along the axis such that rotation of the pointer does not change the relative orientation between the light source and the reflective surfaces. The consistent relative orientation between the light source and the pointer substantially eliminates differences in illumination levels produced during rotation about the axis.Type: ApplicationFiled: November 9, 2004Publication date: July 28, 2005Applicant: Siemens VDO Automotive CorporationInventors: Chay Lee, Vyacheslav Birman, Werner Eckardt
