Lateral slits along the rigidifier allow it to easily flex when a load is applied while in an upright position. When the rigidifier is in an inverted position, an applied load causes the slits to close and the rigidifier to stiffen. The method describes the use of the uni-directional rigidifier in a foldable sofa bed mattress.

  • Foldable mattress with removable pillow top

    Abstract: A foldable mattress and removable pillow top with a means for releasable attachment is not damaged during excessive folding such as when used in a sofa bed. Fastening pairs comprising zippers affixed to the mattress and pillow top in opposing complementary fashion with a wide fold space defined therebetween allow the mattress and attached pillow top to be repeatedly folded and unfolded and avoid crimping and damage to the zipper halves, mattress and attached pillow top.
