  • Patent number: 9167005
Abstract: A method and system are provided in which a broadband gateway may enable a guest or visitor to access content available to the broadband gateway. The content may be received by the broadband gateway through one or more of a plurality of network access service providers that may provide separate physical layer access to the broadband gateway. After a visitor's device is connected to the broadband gateway, the broadband gateway may classify the device. Based on the classification, the device may be authorized to access a portion of the content received. Once the authorization process is complete, the appropriate content may be made available and transferred to the device. The authorization process may include the authentication of a device identifier and/or a user identifier. The authorized access may be time-limited, but may be renewed or enabled when a request is received within a determined period of time.

Abstract: An Ethernet passive optical network over coaxial (EPOC) system rate mechanism. A network device is provided that includes a physical layer device (PHY) that is configured for coupling to a coaxial cable, a medium independent interface that facilitates data transmission at 10 Gbit/s or greater, and a reconciliation sublayer that is coupled to the PHY via the medium independent interface. The reconciliation sublayer has a codeword detector that is configured to detect a reserved codeword that is received from the PHY over the medium independent interface. The codeword detector can be configured to forward a rate control signal to a media access control (MAC) based on the detection of the reserved codeword.

  • Patent number: 9143532
Abstract: A broadband gateway, which enables communication with a plurality of devices, handles at least one physical layer connection to at least one corresponding network access service provider. Security boundaries such as conditional access (CA) and/or digital right management (DRM) boundaries associated with the broadband gateway are identified based on security profiles associated with the plurality of devices and/or a service from networks. The identified security boundaries are utilized to determine or negotiate CA information for content access for the service. The received content may be distributed according to the determined CA information and the security profiles of the corresponding devices. The broadband gateway may be automatically and dynamically configured based on the identified security boundaries to secure content distribution to the devices.

  • Patent number: 9118728
Abstract: Aspects of a method and system for determining physical layer traversal time are provided. In this regard, duration of a time interval may be determined in the PHY of a network device, where the time interval corresponds to an amount of time that occurs between a first time instant at which information is input to the PHY and a second time instant at which corresponding information is output by the PHY. Communication of data to and/or from the network device may be managed based on the determined duration of the time interval. The duration of the time interval may be determined utilizing one or more counters within the PHY. The determined duration may be stored in one or more registers within the PHY. An amount of data that is processed by the PHY during the time interval may be determined within the PHY.

  • Patent number: 9110668
Abstract: Various methods and systems are provided for buffer-batch management for energy efficient networking. In one embodiment, among others, a system includes a host device including an interface with a network. A device driver monitors requests to transmit packets from the host device to the network, buffers the packets in memory of the host device when the host device network interface is estimated to be in a low power mode, and initiates transition of the host device network interface to a full power mode based at least in part upon predefined criteria associated with the buffered packets. The host device network interface may begin transmission of the buffered packets when the host device network interface enters the full power mode. The host device network interface may be a network interface controller such as, e.g., an Ethernet controller configured for Energy Efficient Ethernet operation.

  • Publication number: 20150207573
Abstract: Automotive area networks (AAN) have a substantially fixed network topology, meaning that the physical media used for communications between devices included in the AAN is known. For example, the physical connections within an AAN, sometimes provided by wiring harnesses, can include fixed lengths of twisted pairs of wire (“twisted pairs”). Pre-compensation parameters related to characteristics of the twisted pairs can be determined at the factory, and loaded into the memory of devices connected to the AAN. These pre-compensation parameters are used to improve the fast wake up and link acquisition times of connected devices. Various characteristics of the physical communication channel are measured or estimated as a function of mechanical, ingress, climactic, and environmental variations (MICE), and used to update the pre-compensation parameters.
